->> Has anyone ever shot NCAA college football while on crutches? Is it doable? Any tips?
I plan to stay in the back corner of one end zone and not move around at all. Stay far enough back to be out of the way of any players. |

->> Never done it but as long as you keep your wits about you and pay attention to the action of the field, and take your lack of mobility into account when the teams in the red zone I don't think you'll have any issues.
I often will sit in the end zone and probably couldn't get out of the way answer faster than you could while on crutches and have always been fine.
When I know they are going to be throwing into the end zone though, I get up off my rear and shoot from a kneeling position which would allow me to move if I have to. Its just about thinking in advance to avoid putting yourself in a risky position.
One other thing you might want to consider is turning your misfortune into an oppurtunity by shooting from higher up instead of dealing with the crowds and risk of the end zone.
I've seen some really cool shots from up in the stands where you could sit and not have to worry about anything.
I normally wouldn't go up there myself at a regular game, as I doubt you would, but perhaps this is a good reason to try something different for a change. |

| ->> Our intern shot a trainwreck on crutches today.......he did pretty well considering.... It was his first real hard breaking news expereince so I do not think he felt his foot. On a more serious not my boss had knee surgery last year and was on light duty and shoot USM from the endzone on this cool little seat monopod looking thing with a 400 and had no problems. |

| ->> I saw Peter Read Miller shooting at the Rose Bowl with one of his legs in what appeared to be a full cast or splint of some sort a while back. Did not seem to bother him. |

->> Years ago I shot a game from a golf cart at the end zone. I had a broken ankle, in a cast on crutches. I used a 600mm lens and it worked out fine. The cart allowed me to change end zones by the quarters. The SID loaned me the cart.
Good luck |

->> I've shot college baseball on crutches, after having torn my ACL/meniscus 2 days prior (before having surgery). I couldn't put pressure on it at all. I shot with a 400, 70-200, and a remote - by myself. Worked the same 8 or so positions around the field I typically cover a game, from behind the dugouts to the outfield. No excuses. lol.
It's not standing there shooting that's difficult. It's getting to your position, while carrying gear, going down stairs, and navigating tripping hazards and distracted crews who will bump into you on the sidelines. |

| ->> Thanks for the encouragement everyone. Getting around in Boone Pickens Stadium is normally a chore, so with crutches it's going to be next to impossible to from one side of the field to the other during the game. I think I'll just camp out in the end zone closest to the photo work room, (and the medic station). |

->> I might be missing something but a few weeks ago a contest was bashed for awarding the winner a pass to assist a credentialed photog, who would have had someone there regardless if this was a contest or not. The responses, were mostly negative due to safety... will this person get hurt, will he interfere with other photogs , will he hurt players, will he hurt... safety safety etc.
I am not sure what I am missing but if you are on cruthes, in my opinion you do not belong on the sidelines at all, never mind carrying a large lense. This is for the same reason as what was expressed in the realated post... for your own and players safety. A golf cart... WOW!! All I hear is safety safety etc. A player runs into this cart who is liable??? You or the SID that let you use it?? If you are "parked" way off the field what other photogs can't stand at the line just so you can get a veiw?
I sit and kneel, mostly kneel, in the endzone and will be 100X more mobile than anyone on crutches, if that someone is holding a 400 as I am I am 200X more mobile.
What am I missing? |
