| ->> Am I reading this correct that an Asst. Photo Editor makes $25,000 per month and photographers are averaging $20,000 per month tax free + housing expenses? Check this link on page 3 http://88.80.13.160.nyud.net/leak/national-salaries-2009.pdf |

->> "Am I reading this correct..."
No, since those salaries are being quoted (presumably) in the local currency (the dirham) so a photo editor's 22000 dirham monthly wage would work out to be around US$6000 a month or $96000/year.
Tax free? Not if you're an American citizen. You'd have to pay US income tax on anything over $87600/year.
Also don't forget that the article quoted is Australian and so it's probably quoting things is A$. |

->> Ummm... the US. Government recently advertised for a photographer for a position that paid anywhere from $45K to $150K a year. It depended on overtime and some other issues.
Like shooting in a combat zone. The location was Aghanistan. Don't automatically assume there is no catch.
There's always a catch. The fact there are 17 openings should tell you something. |

->> Chuck,
I met Santa Claus today. He walked right up to me one of my Son's at Yankee Candle in Western Massachusetts and shook our hands.
Hell...I'm Jewish, but I know Santa Lives in South Deerfield, Massachusetts!
...for those of you in Abu Dhabi...

->> I know the photo editor at the National, he was a picture editor at the Globe and Mail in Toronto before being hired for the start up. He also hired a good number of his freelancers to go over with him.
I also know quite a few people that work at the paper.
A lot of the reporter interns that have come through my paper have also found themselves out there.
Seems like a fun atmosphere, a great place to be if you are young!
They tell me that rent is super expensive in Abu Dhabi. One friend of mine pays 9000 dirhams (US$2500) a month for a one-bedroom apartment, with no balcony, or appliances (they had to buy their own).
And yes the housing allowance was included in those numbers we saw in that leaked document.
In fact, many of the staffers at the paper have moved to Dubai, a one-hour commute away. The economic downturn has not affected the housing market in Abu Dhabi that much, but Dubai has seen rents slashed by about 70 percent.
And for the most important commodity, beer, about US$7 on average! |

->> My friend that works there said this was old news, released at least 6 months ago.
The salaries are in local currency, and they have to pay for their own housing.
I also know one photographer that was there with his family, and has since moved away. His family didn't like it very much there. |

| ->> wow! well I got things to say about the IRS but I wont... I just dont understand why we would get taxes on wages... its a wage not a capital gain... people are not working for you to make money for you but instead you are working for some one to make money for them... idk just talking out loud some one forwarded a good documentary about it... so stuff was a bit extreme but some had very valid points and good research into it |
