| ->> I've been asked more and more lately to come and speak about digital photography ethics and the like lately and wondered if anyone charges for speaking? In the past I haven't, but heck, why not, and what to charge? |

->> I've spoken to classes for years and usually don't ask for a fee, but if one is offered, I make it a point to never negotiate. Occasionally it's been for a PJ class taught by a colleague, so we get to hang out afterwards for a bite and/ or drinks with a few students when schedules allow. It's always been a form of giving something back for me, which I still really get a kick out of.

Glad you mentioned this. Why is it that WE PHOTOGRAPHERS are always the last one to start charging for our knowledge.
Specially when is clear that there is a demand and folks seek it?
Somehow when God was creating professions he must had been drinking wine and while thinking of preachers, nuns and missionaries the word photographer got in there too.
What to charge?
Depends who is your client/town/audience and if the program is been sponsored by Canon, Hassy, Nikon, Apple etc
In the past my speaking fees had range from $700-$1,100 for a 3-4 hrs.
If you are traveling they should pick up the tab for your flight/hotel/meals/taxi etc unless you happen to be in that town for a shoot or any reason. While you are there and having the time you can also offer private consulting.
Some of the folks I photograph get pay 40-100K++ for a one night speaking. Yet photographers gotta think if getting pay for sharing our knowledge is ok...

->> Speaking from experience...wait for it...
1-2 hrs speaking to a class of less than 30 students is about $200-250. |

Just kidding. Dunno if this helps, but a couple of my clients are children's authors. They give presentations to school and children's groups and charge anywhere from $300 for an evening presentation, to $600 for a half day and $1000 for a full day. As Manuello mentioned, travel and other expenses are tacked on as well. |

->> Thanks for the feedback. A local college wants me to talk about digital ethics and asked what I charge. So, if they are asking, then I figured yes, I should get paid for my time!
Manuello, as always, great advice. Chet, I always did it that way, but these days, we work so hard for so much less it seems, the sacrifices we make to do what we do should be reciprocated, especially since there are a ton of seminars I would love to go to that costs money, why not mine? |

| ->> I have not charged for it. I spoke to Cal Poly Pamona and It was actually out of pocket for me to come up. But it did feel good to help the kids anyway possible. They were a very bright bunch and it was a pleasure to talk with them. If asked I would do it again as long as I had nothing scheduled. For students... I look at it as "Paying it Forward" |
