->> I need some kind of a case thats secure and large enough to fit the equipment I travel with. I have a couple of pelican 1620 cases but they are just a bit too small.
A single case a bit bigger than the 1620 would probably do. I like to just drop my lowpro backpack in it, but would like enough room besides it to sit my 400 2.8 case or similar as well.
Also I drive an SUV, I'd like some of your guys suggestions on the best way to secure this case in the back.
Any travel security suggestions are welcome. Thanks guys. |

->> I would suggest a Pelican - 1660 or what ever it takes to hold your gear. Then I use locks on the case plus the heavy duty cable bike locks to secure it to a couple of anchor ( seatbelt/kid restraint points in the car, loop the cables through the locks, the more locks, more cable locks over top the case etc the better - it will slow them down. etc - high visibility if they get through the next step.
The next step.... I have a mat black piece of duvatine ( cloth with no reflections) that covers the rear cargo area of my SUV - meaning that especially at night when someone looks through the windows there is virtually nothing to see except black.
That being said, and speaking as a 20 year served retired police officer, remember one thing only......you can slow down the dirt bag that wants to steal your gear, you can make it harder to get your gear, you can make the time longer spent on getting it ( and there by increasing their risk of getting caught ) but you CAN NOT stop them. PERIOD.
I also leave my glove box and center consul open and empty, no GPS etc in view.
Leave nothing in view that would interest anyone - spare change, CD's, a cool hat on the back seat.....NOTHING>
But..its still a gamble - get a small dolly and take all of your stuff with you.

->> Thanks Chris, exactly the kind of information I was looking for.
I was just more worried about my gear when I run into a store, grab some lunch etc. I travel to a lot of large cities and you just cant be too careful.
I do keep everything insured of course, but who wants to go through that nightmare claims process. |
