->> Sure would like the hear from any memebers who are using the new Elinchrom Quadra's for location work. The specs one these seem ideal particulalry their size and weight.
Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts. |

->> I got one of the first batch to arrive in London. My kit has two heads, two batteries and one pack. I was always a Lumedyne man before (over 9 years) and this kit has converted me. The power output is every bit of the claimed 400 w/s when using a single head and I like almost everything about it. The two only gripes are with the built-in tilting clamp - its plastic and cannot hold the weight of a softbox and the annoying use of an umbrella gripping system that makes you use the Elinchrom own-brand brollies.
I have adapted my heads very cheaply to overcome both problems and I have detailed how to make it work with a softboxon my blog http://www.dg28.com/blog/equipment/quadra_speed_ring.htm and the mini-review is here http://www.dg28.com/blog/equipment/ranger_quadra.htm
Any questions, let me have them - I've been shooting with this kit for several months now.

Recent stuff shot with the ERQ. The battery+pack is only about 6 lb and the head is like 1/2 lb...and I have control over the power output from the remote in .1 stop F-stops.
and it all fits in a case that easy to carry. I've shot about 240 shots from one battery charge.

->> Delane-
Thanks for posting the images.
Are those at full power (400ws)? Using an umbrella or soft box? How far away are the heads from the subject?
Thanks in advance.

->> I think that a lot of manufacturers are a little over-ambitious with their power claims. Elinchrom tell it how it is and the ERQ at 400 w/s does a very good job.

->> Neil and Delane -- Thanks for thoughts and now a few questions.
1. Elinchrom does make an adapter ring that allows you to mount any of their standard softboxes. Are these made of plastic as well?
2. They also make a dedicated 15x15 softbox for the Quadra heads. Do either of you use this or have any thoughts for use on location over an umbrella?
3. I guess what I like most about the Quadra is being able to take studio quality light into the field without breaking your back. It seems to have a good fit between the "Bag O Speedlights" and studio strobes. Agree / Disagree??
4. Finally, where do get service on these in the US?
Thanks!!! |

->> Kevin,
#4 -You'd get service through Bogen USA out of New Jersey...
I bought the adapter ring, but I haven't used it yet. I haven't used a light modifier on any of my shoots yet primarily because it's always windy outside and I don't want the hassle of umbrellas or soft-boxes blowing around or anything.
I did find out that you can use Calumet umbrella's which are much cheaper than the elinchrom equivalent.
I'm betting that the soft-box will be "nicer" than an umbrella just because of the increased "control" you have with the light
I'm not 100% certain bit I don't think any of those images were shot at full power...

->> Answers:
1. No, they are very solid.
2. Tried it once - 15" is too small for most of what I do.
3. Agree strongly. Mine fits very nicely into a Lowe Pro Stealth 650AW including two heads, two batteries, several Skyport bits and pieces and a load of gels and accessories.
4. See Delane's reply.

| ->> I was just wondering how are these better then say a norman 400 b or 200c besides power differences with the 200c. also with the battery is it really just 3 lbs for the pack? Thanks David |

->> I think that with the batter it's more like 5-6 lb (pack+battery combo). I shot an event with it on my shoulder the whole time but I use it as a counter weight by hanging it from the light stand that I am using at the time.
I've never used the Norman so I can't speak about that. For me, this allows me to still use my Elinchrom grids, softboxes, 60" Octa, umbrellas, etc PLUS it's made by Elinchrom so that carried weight when I was considering the product. I just like having top-notch gear.

->> Kevin-->I just saw your question...sorry...
I have not shot any indoor sporting events with the ERQ system; I use it mainly for executive portraits shot in a clients conference room. |
