D300 Mirror Issue???

->> for some reason the mirror on my D300 is getting stuck in the up position. the shutter works fine and the exposures are not affected at all by this. when it gets stuck i just click the shutter few times and the mirror comes down.

i got the D300 brand new in February 2008 and this just began happening now... (the camera does not get used heavily in my opinion.... i baby it and take good care of it.) at first i thought it might have something do with shooting with apertures smaller than f/2.8 but it also does that while shooting at f/2.8. the mirror also seems to get stuck more often while shooting outdoors vs. indoors.

what can this be? is it time to kick it to the curb and upgrade? how much might the repair be?

->> I had this happen twice. They replaced the mirror mechanism. First time was around 100K actuations and recently again at 170K actuations. The first repair was under warranty and the second, almost a year to the date, cost me $220.
If it happens a third time... hopefully a D400 will be available.

->> This has happened to me as well, the first time I sent it in it came back and worked for a few days then it happened again. I swear I can tell when it is coming by the sound of the mirror and have noticed a similar noise coming from my new d700. I actually had the mirror stuck on my 300 for most of an assignment and figured out as a long as you shoot on manual exposure it still will take pictures but you can't see through the viewfinder, which makes life interesting. One word of advice, if your mirror starts to lock up send the camera in right away, it only gets worse.
