->> It never fails. We forget something when going on location.
Do you have a check list? What do you take on a location shoot? What have you forgotten? If you don't mind sharing, please send me your list or just post it to the board. I will compile all the data to make a master list. After I have everything. I'll post a link where you can download the list file. Thanks! |

->> The things I have forgot the most often that became a giant PITA are:
Memory cards
To recharge the spare batteries
To clean the lens
The bag of studs for my super clamps
The #%^* special hot shoe you need to trigger a 580EX with a Pocket Wizard |

->> I have an Excel Spreadsheet called Idiot Checklist!!
It works for me.... But it changes depending on the job, I change the spreadsheet depending on the job, every job is different.

->> I've tried checklists, but like Yamil, it changes depending on the assignment so I have had limited success using them.
To be honest, despite the fact that I always take back up gear for my back up gear, I nearly always also forget to bring something I plan to use for the shoot. There are times when a piece of gear decides it no longer wants to work. So I make a game of it, a mental exercise - my fotodoku so to speak, I enjoy playing (most of the time). All the way to a shoot, I try to figure out what I left behind before I get there. The second part of the game figuring out how to accomplish the mission without the needed gear. The fun part of my self-inflicted fun is adapting, improvising and accomplishing the assignment with the handicap. In the last 10 years, I've lost once - I forget CF cards (left wallet on my desk) and didn't have time to buy or run back home to pick them up. |

->> Kent, no list yet....
my light kit is always packed and everything sits together as one unit.... all i have to do is grab it and go. each time i pack and unpack the kit i make sure everything is rolled up properly and put back in the same compartment.... this is sooooo boring!!!! and so important too! (this helps with the mental check list i guess... this way i can just glance at it and know if everything is there or not.)
several issues that i have ran into were kind of funny actually......
- we take my wife's car to do a shoot and half way there i realize that all my extension cords are in my car and i can't turn back to get them.
- i grab one light and a softbox from the kit to do a quick portrait and as i'm walking from the car to the location with the strobe in my hands i realize i forgot the power cord. |

->> As with most of you my checklist is in my head. Problem is my head gets sidetracked often. Just thought it would be fun to hear what you forget and try to make a list to not have this happen as much.
I do many kinds of jobs also. I once forgot a ladder when I was going to shoot runway. Unless your 7" tall and need something to stand on. Last week I was hired to photograph display windows. It's tough to clean them without cleaner and towels. k |

->> I use the "pack it away when used" philosophy too. My kit never really varies, so at the end of the job I make sure that everything is charged and packed away. I have in-car charging for my Elinchrom batteries and carry several camera batteries too.
If I'm flying, the kit goes wholesale into a Peli case.

->> I'm considering a numerous checklists, as there are several different types of gigs that require different kits.
I'm also considering putting a checklist on every major bag/case so that assistants put things back in the right spot and everything is always where I expect it to be.
The worst thing I ever forgot was to check rental gear COMPLETELY. I rented some lighting for a portrait shoot in NJ. When I stopped by to pick up the gear on the way to the shoot, I checked to make sure that the pack/heads were there and that all seemed okay. When we started setting up, the power cord they had included was for a European outlet. Oops. We scrounged something up that looked robust enough...I think it came from a old fax machine. |
