I'm going mad!
Hal Smith, Photographer

->> Yes I still work at a newspaper, and on occasion I have to deal with submitted art. It doesn't matter what I do when I get emailed photo submissions, most people don't understand the difference between screen resolution, print resolution or file formats.

"Yes mam, you sent me the engagement photo at 200dpi but you didn't re-scale the photo so now it's still to small for us to use."

I've seen up-scaled photos sent to me at 2000 inches wide at a resolution of 1dpi, and I've heard from someone that it looks fine to me. "It looks fine on what," (UHGGGG....click, click....bang.. So much for Russian roulette!)

All I want is for people to follow a photo submission policy, and please don't embed images in documents, email images converted to CMYK, PDF, WMV, HTML, GIF, BMP, PCX or any other file format other than a nice 8x10 inch, 200dpi jpg. It's really not that hard folks.

P.S. Some people that send me this stuff are "Professional Photographers," give me a break; please.

->> actually my favorite is the crop vs resize issue, when they don't notice that the people all have heads like Stewie from Family guy and the basketballs are football shaped.

->> Michael,
The reality is management at most papers doesn't care.
More free content means less staff.

->> Listen... just because I have a heart doesn't make me an expert on heart surgery. They do that. We do this.

Thank God that in our profession we still have the intellect over the general "photograph shooting" population of what's entailed to make a great photo.

They can buy all the DSLRs they want but as for the intellect and knowledge in the industry...they can't take that away from us!

->> I have this happen when people want me to use their photos on magazine covers or other templates we use. It got so bad, that I wrote an e-mail and saved it as a template. Whenever I got a file that was wrong I just sent the E-mail. So far it's solved about 99% of the issues. I took me awhile to write, but it's very precise on how they need to resize the photo. I'm pretty sure I copy and pasted some of the information from docs I found on-line.

->> The problem I run into more than anything is people just don't understand the lingo, and I don't know how to explain it.

Most of the people that I deal with don't have Photoshop, and don't know a pixel from a pickle. When they call and I tell them that I need it 200 dpi at 10 inches on the long side there is quiet on the other end of the phone.

It got to the point where I just tell them to set there cameras so that the take the least amount of photos and just attach them directly to the email. Don't use any third party programs that "opitmize for email."

However I do feel your pain.

Oh yeah, I feel your pain. I deal with this daily....

->> I just hate that I send a JPG, and they say it is too small because it is 1mb. I say open it in Photoshop and then tell me what size it is (60mb or 28mb, etc.)

They still don't understand, and I say it is similar to a sponge with and without water.
