Performance boost for cable internet users.

->> Just wanted to pass along my findings from yesterdays IT endeavor. Over the past month my cable modem became less stable and uploads would take forever. I did some searching and settled on a new modem. Yesterday I installed a new Motorola SB6120 cable modem. This modem is designed to work under the 'new' DOCSIS 3.0 specs although I do not subscribe to any upper tier service plan.
I measured my speeds both with the old and new modem and got a 3x performance boost. The reason for the post is that while I DO NOT subscribe to the upgraded plans it appears that currently Comcast's machines are not scaling back speeds to the lower limits and I am cruising along at 30mbps down and 8 up. I tested this with speed tests to both local servers (Boston and NY) and cross country Boston-SF and Boston Seattle. My uploads are also lighting fast to my hosting account.
So in a nut shell until Comcast puts the brakes on their machines this could be a great upgrade to get a major performance boost for your internet access for about $100. |

->> Eric, Thanks for posting this. I'm looking into it now that you have brought it to my attention.
I use Cox Cable Internet, and transfer most of my files from my mac pro at home. I've had to upload RAW files lately, and if any speedboost can help me cut down on the time transmitting, it would definitely be worth the hundred dollars (or so?) for the modem. |

->> Nick you're welcome. I went whole hog and upgraded the rest of the computers here to gigabit ethernet as well. The difference in speed is jaw dropping. I put in a gb router and gb switch too. Now when I move files from the laptop I use a Belkin gigabit ethernet expresscard adapter plug the laptop into the network directly. AMAZING difference in speed moving files like that. The modem is also gigabit speed on the ethernet side of the equation. I have Vonage which normally had choppy audio when I would u/l a game. It crystal clear and solid now. My wife can stream music, I can u/l files and the phone works too!
Between this and the new Tivo app for Blackberry it's been a very good IT week for me :) |

Very interesting on the cable side of things, being a Comlast victim myself. |

->> The Tivo app lets you program your Tivo when you're on the road. Twice last year I had to find a hotspot to login via my laptop now if I'm running late I can just set my Tivo from my Storm. I got my wife a BB Tour yesterday and I just know that the Tivo app will be app #2 to be installed.
