Losing Images

->> during the past two weeks i've mysteriously lost 400-plus images while shooting high school football.
situation 1: i shot a high school football game last friday night. i chimped as usual and picked out a couple of the game's key moments. when i returned to the office, i plugged the card into my reader, tagged in photo mechanic and noticed that i had fewer images than i remembered shooting. i opened the image folder in a finder window and about 200-300 images had been corrupted. no recovery was possible, so i was stuck with a few images from late in the game.
this game was shot with a mark IIn on a san disk extreme III 4gb card.
situation 2: i shot another high school game tonight. just like last week, i chimped and found my images after i shot them. much like last week, i lost half of my take mysteriously. this time, however, the files simply disappeared. no trace. my first image was shot at 7:14 and the last one was 7:38. since i was there from the first until fourth quarter, i would expect more than 22 minutes of shooting to appear. i did not change my card during the game. i took it from the camera straight to the reader.
this time, i shot with a mark II on a san disk ultra II card. in addition, i used two different readers (a san disk and a sony) and two different computers -- the work pc and my mac book pro.
i am really frustrated as this did not happen on any other takes during the week. just the past two football games.
is my camera deleting the images to kindly let me know that i suck or is there a logical reason as to why two different bodies with two different cards on two different readers on two different computers mysteriously deleted or corrupted my takes? |

| ->> Perhaps you removed the card with your camera still on? I did this once and had several of my images corrupted. |

| ->> Sounds like you may have accidentaly shut off camera or interupted the write process? |

->> AAron,
Were you able to retrive any images using SanDisk software? |

| ->> Do you have an SD card in your mark IIn also? I keep one in there in case I overrun a card during a critical period in a game to save time on switching cards, but the first time I ever overflowed onto it I was confused also as to the "disappearance" of images. |

->> i'm still not sure what happened. it irks me that it only happened with the two assignments i mentioned. nothing like that happened during the week between them.
thanks for the input. i'm going to try as much of it as i can to prevent this from happening again. |

->> Aaron,
When you put the card back in the camera were all the photos there that you didn't see when you tried to view them on your laptop?
Second question...do you format your cards before each assignment?
Third question...turn your camera on and then press on the battery and then try to move (while locked in position in the camera) and see if you notice the camera goes off/on when you do this? |

->> Have you recently replaced your battery on your camera? The reason I say this is I purchased a few batteries last month on EBY for my 1D's. Well I would go out and shoot sports and get back to the house and be like WTF. Were are the photos? I know I shot more then this.
Well what I was finding out after looking over this over and over was the new batteries I purchased on ebay would pop out just so slightly for a few seconds then slide back in. It was if they were not actually a true fit on the camera.
I never would have been able to tell had I not decided to do a 100% investigation on this. I have since tossed the batteries and have had zero problems of lost files. |
