Blog Software Suggestions

->> Any suggestions for blog software? I want something inexpensive or even free that would work on the website I created via Google Apps, and if there's one that is "universal" in nature and would also be compatible with my Photoshelter site, that's a big plus. Easy to use, low learning curve, and basically I can just start writing and posting. I have both Mac and PC machines so either platform would work. As you can tell by my queries, I have never done this before so I'm open to all ideas.
Thanks! |

->> There are plenty of options out there, and pretty much all of them are free - blogspot, typepad, etc.
I use wordpress, which is installed on my own server. It's a bit more involved than the standard wordpress.com setup (as opposed to wordpress.org for the self-install), but you'll have the benefit of hosting it on your own servers rather than theirs. If that's not an issue or concern for you, you can always just set it up on their servers, create an alias, and it'd look like basically the same thing.
Plus, if you choose to go this route, PhotoShelter just rolled out their partnership with Graph Paper Press, which would offer another option for integration and customization, for a fee of course.
They're all decent and offer pretty much the same thing. It really just depends on your tastes and preferences, as well as how technical you want to get on the back end. I went with a wordpress install because of the customization and wide variety of plugins.
I doubt you can really go wrong. Good luck! |

| ->> For a "real" blog, wordpress.com. For a quickie blog, posterous.com or tumblr.com |

->> Like Kelvin, I use Wordpress installed on my server hosted by Bluehost. I set it up about six weeks ago and have been very happy with it so far. Extremely flexible and I felt it was very easy to set up and customize. It took me one day to get my URL moved, the Wordpress app installed, a template located and configured and was up and running.
I also use Photoshelter and am anxious to read/learn more about their recent integrations but was already embedding my Photoshelter slideshows in my blog before this integration without any difficulty.
There are lots of options out there but for me this has been a great fit.
You can take a look here if you are curious. www.ks-images.com
Good luck with whatever solution you decide. |

It was easy to set up, back end admin is easy to use and the whole thing is totally customizable. www.mainesportsreport.com if you want to look. |

Thanks for the input...can you email me directly with your server setup tech specs? I'll see you around STL I'm sure, but if you don't mind sending the info that would be great.
PS Thanks EVERYONE for your great suggestions. I have plenty of info to get me started in the right direction. |

->> jonathan,
if i'm remembering correctly, blogger has a "publish via FTP" function. so you would:
1. set up a directory on your webserver called "/blog"
2. ensure that the webserver allows FTP
3. set the destination directory, and enter your login/pw into blogger
then theoretically, each time you click "publish," it'll send the updated files over to your webserver. |

->> Thanks Allen,
here is neonskys answer -
Yes, you can set it up to publish via FTP. I believe you would need to make an HTML template to publish from. Again, this would not be linked with your Wordpress blog and you would need to contact Blogger to figure out how this works.
You can use your server space with us to accomplish this, just upload that HTML template to your FTP root folder and follow Blogger's instructions. |

->> I use Wordpress, self-hosted on Westhost with the Pro Photo theme by NetRiver, http://www.prophotoblogs.com. The theme is extremely customizable and easy to use. Plus the cost is not bad with a one-time payment of $179. For that you can use the theme for two blogs associated with the same business. Here is a discount code BRYVIC835 which will save you $10.
Here is my blog http://vickmark.com/blog
(Full disclosure: I get $7 when you use the above discount code but I can say with all honesty that I am very happy with my purchase and that I would recommend it anyway.) |
