->> I have fotoQuote 6, but am having trouble figuring out the usage for a request.
I shot a story for a newspaper and now a hospital wants to reprint the article and my photo for informational purposes. What category does this fall under?
Thanks in advance,

->> Recently I created a quote and needed to supply figures for categories that were not available. I think you can edit a category to make it whatever you want.

| ->> Oh, I thought you were itemizing. I think you just have to "wing it" and adjust for what you think is fair. |

| ->> Yah, not exactly sure. The hospital wants to reprint the article and have it as informational material to hand out to patients. In the process of winging it. |

->> Stew " Yah, not exactly sure. " come on does that sounds like the right way to start negotiating or finding out the right licensing fees. GO and ask more questions to the person who phoned you???
Right off the bat, this is PR for them which also is advertising. Dont let them fool you thinking that is for "INFORMATION PURPOSES."
HOw cheap is a hospital..ANY HOSPITAL in the USA? I think we all know the answer to that.
Yet the hospital wants to lure more patients thanks to your powerful images?
Think of this, how much do you think they would have to pay to do an ad campaign using similar images?
This is the perfect deal, meaning, if it was printed on the local newspaper then gotta be good so then whoever gets sick will come to that hospital with not question ask.
One of the biggest problems for newspapers photographers when it comes to negotiating commercial deals is that they "Think Little and They Get Little." NOne of this is the photographers fault but the mindset of working for years for CHEAP newspapers were $150 day rate was plenty enough and if you eat a burger you needed receipt for that too and had to fight for the mileage.
YOU got a nice pot of gold and they want it now so deal properly or get some pro to help you even if you pay them 20% of the final payment. But you need to know how to sail those waters. There is a huge difference getting $500.00 instead of 3K-7K or more. DO you want to think little or the way successful photographers think?

->> Manuello. I was hoping you would chime in. You are the master negotiator.
I did speak more with the person and found out their exact usage. I was able to figure out a reasonable fee that included a small 1k first run of a less than 1/4 page photo. They also asked about web usage and possible reprints, which I was able to give them the fees for that too. Let's hope they want to print more and use it on the web. $$$
I know hospitals aren't cheap. That's why I treated it as a corporate client.
Thanks,

HA HA HAh. Thanks and I help when I can or if I am not traveling and got the time. BUt make not mistake, we are all helping each other and making it easier for the next generation.
Stew make sure that for reprints you do get permission from the newspaper. Reprints is a huge money maker for photographers. Is more prominent in the magazine world. And if you ever shoot for magazines make sure that reprints are not part of the deal. Meaning you will deal directly with any 3rd party regarding that matter and that you are not giving those rights to ANY MAGAZINES. Otherwise they will be making the $$$ and you will be out of a great chunk of money.
IN this case find out how many reprints they want. If they tell you 1,000-3,000 you can easily get 3k for that. But the newspaper should give you the ok first specially while using the full article so there is also a writer unless he is a newspaper staffer. So they need to negotiated with the paper first.
To make it easier you could let them get the OK directly with the paper and then you can get involve. But the paper has got to give the OK first. Even if you are a freelancer, they own the story & the ir branding as it appeared.
with the hospital, make sure you do have a contract all signed up and license your work for two yrs or less. IF they want longer terms then charge more.
FOr the little I know here you should be putting into your bank acct not less than 6K. Less than 5K you are leaving lots of money on the table.
SO with all those ingredients make up a great STEW of a contract and serve it to them on a nice silver plate.
