Have I become a gear snob?

->> A magazine cover shoot. Really?

http://www.complexvideo.com/Girls/Eliza-Dushku

I guess dude has way more talent than I ever will. No lights, no reflectors, bright sun, and a point and shoot...

->> Ummm thanks for distracting me..... I did see strobes going off and did notice a reflector to the model's right at one point. That being said, about 20+ years ago a very talented Playboy photographer shot the centerfold using a a Canon entry level slr. It think it was a "T" something.... He did it to prove a point.

With the exception of a few hundred photo students, the point he was responsible for making had nothing to do with his choice of camera.

I remember watching one of those behind the scenes shows about shooting the annual Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues.

Richardson shot his session with a Pentax point and shoot if I remember correctly.

Oh, and sorry for the 20 second soap ad before the video...

->> Eric,

I'm pretty sure that only the ancillary pics of the centerfold model were shot on 35mm. 20 years ago Playboy required all of the actual centerfolds be shot on 8x10 sheet film.

Of course, I only ready Playboy for the pictures.

It is just easy to get caught up in co-megapixel dependancy. The disease where you think you need every possible piece of equipment, accessory, strobe, strap, bag. And the lens you really need to do the job is always the one you don't own.

->> Was there a guy with a camera in that video? OK, seriously, I think they were interested in producing a "look at my backyard photo shoot" short video to promote her appearing in the magazine more than a beautiful photo layout. It sort of has the amateur, "maybe YOU can do the same shoot with Eliza" approach to it. That one cover image sort of has a basic raw appeal/look to it. That said, I 'm running out now to get a point and shoot and wait for Eliza's call.

->> sorry, I get that mag in the mail and have always wondered after looking at the quality of photos whether the shooters were actually being paid. most of the time I have though they were actually shot by high school kids with point and shoots. guess that video proved my point. I mean, I get the mag FREE. never asked for it. it just arrives and seems to be a masturbatory publication for that marc ecko dude.

->> This reminds me of a story when I was a Polaroid Tech rep. Technical products reps were responsible for introducing 8 x 10 product used for professional photography - including studio photography.

We used Polaroid 8x10 Polacolor as test material for Playboy centerfold shoots. The first time they used the material ...tech reps would process. When the 8 x 10 would come out for inspection.. the centerfold would "cover up".

While the modesty was one thing, to this day, do you think she ever realized what she was covering up was there on the Polacolor print??

It was a tough gig when that product was introduced. Got to use Sinars and Broncolor lights when we introduced 8 x 10 product. Talk about fun...

Sorry, didn't mean to highjack...the discussion about the model in the video sent me back in time..
