Problem with Studio Stobes syncing
Joshua Brown, Photographer

->> I have a set of Bowen studio stobes and I'm trying to take some shots using a pocket wizard as a remote. The strobes fire followed by the camera (D700), resulting in a completely black image. I'm using two Pocket Wizard Plus II Transceivers, one on the camera and one on a fill strobe. The main light strobe is slaving to the flash, and a PW Plus Transmitter is the remote trigger. I'm using a pre-trigger release cord with manual exposure and manual focus and firing at 1/125. Can anyone think of a reason why the camera would not fire in sync with the stobes? Any help is appreciated.

->> I can explain why it's not working, but not via typing. Give me a call via # on my member page. I think you need 1 more PW in this equation on the hot shoe.

->> You need one PW attached to the remote socket control of the D700 (set Channel 1) then place a PW on the hotshoe off the D700 (on channel 2). Put the PW connected to the lights on channel 2. The camera takes a second to fire after receiving the signal.

->> Joshua,
If I am not mistaken, from what I can make from the info you provided, it sounds like you have 3 PocketWizard units. 2 Transceivers and 1 Transmitter. If this is correct then here is what you do. Start by setting the Transmitter to a channel 1 thru 3. Set the Transceiver unit for the remote camera to the same channel as the Transmitter. The Transceiver unit for the strobes should be set to one channel higher than the Transmitter and the Transceiver unit for the remote camera. For example if the Transmitter and Transceiver for the remote camera are set to channel 1 then the Transceiver unit for the strobe should be set to channel 2.

The Transceivers automatically switch from Receiver to Transmitter allowing only one unit to be used for Relay Mode, and the total number of units needed would be 3.

If you are attempting to equalize 2 or more cameras to the strobes, then you will need to read the story by Robert Beck as mentioned above.

Hope this helps!

->> Reverse the set up. Set your second strobe to slave and your main light connect to the PW transciever. The slave on the main light is not working likely because your second strobe isn't putting out enough light to trigger it. Switch the set up and you should be golden.

->> Thank you all for your advice. Thanks Jeff, your tip was the same as Chris's. I've taken down the setup, but it seems as though this should work. Thanks again.
