->> For how many showings? How long? Will your image be in the background as the story rolls or just a few seconds showing? or the main image as the story commences then fades out once the intro is finished?
It should start around $600 for a single showing. For background start with $1,500. At the start of the segment ask for 2K
Any additional showing is additional. Same way they charge Coca Cola or Mercedes for each commercial. Have them send you the $$ to your bank or paypal account asap. And charge the additional extra fees that your bank/paypal may charge you.
And have it ALL ON PAPER and make sure that the producer, no an assistant, agrees with that and signs it. Make sure that when the credit rolls, even if is as the speed of light, your name © is shown.

->> There are a lot of things that go into determining what to charge. If you're in the business of licensing photography, you should invest in both of the following:

Negotiating Stock Photo Prices by Jim Pickerell and Cheryl Pickerell DiFrank

Jody my comment is regarding a stock image. I think that was what he meant by his casual way of asking. I even asked him some questions. Perhaps he was just curious and wanted to know. But any time a network calls you, is after their researchers couldnt find any other images besides yours. Meaning, is the right image/moment/place and they want it.
The "See it, Shoot it, Send it.." is a totally different negotiating. A news event can go from $1,000-2 Million or more. The 2M+++ would be exclusive (Princess Diana car crash been shot by one or two photographers instead of 20) while lower figures can be negotiated per showing.
Also you gotta factor the show. If we are talking 60 Minutes or 20/20 then the fees would be a lot higher for any stock images.
The $600 can add up if is showing later by the same network on their morning shows or as feeder between commercials, reruns. Think of a print used is a print paid for.
With a news photo event, and as a freelancers, all depends who is the person involve, the moment and if you were the ONLY photographer with the right images. That is how Paparazzi feast on getting images from top celebs or with "in the moment person" before anybody else blinks and those are the ones who usually get the 2-4M per photos.
Photojournalists may only get a Pulitzer, a small award with your name on the news, maybe some gigs for Time or Newsweek while the © stays with your company. And SADLY a few yrs later most folks cant remember why, or if you even won the Pulitzer in the first place while still struggling to pay your house and hanging to your newspaper job.
For licensing stock images, non at the moment event, my numbers were pretty close to what is been paid right now.

| ->> I forgot to add that the $600 is only a number. If you can get 2k or even more instead of $600 for a few seconds on the show then go for it. All depends how much the network needs that image for their show and how difficult it has been for them to find any other similar images. We control the moment and we should all charge what we think they will pay as long as we dont get to greedy and loose the deal. |
