->> I am using a PC and typing in the ITPC info in Photo Mechanic and hitting "apply to all images"-the caption info is there in PM but when I open the image in Photoshop elements 7, it isn't there. Does any one know why, or what i am going wrong?

| ->> yes-and it attaches and the caption is there in Photo Mechanic. When I open the image up in Photoshop 7 elements, none of the ITPC info is there. On the MAC, they appear doing the same process |

->> Run it in reverse. Change the IPTC data in PS Elements 7 and then see if PM sees it.
I've never had the problem in the full version of Photoshop but I seem to recall a couple years ago there was a problem with where Adobe was putting the IPTC tags in Bridge and maybe some other programs that caused some things not to be seen by other programs looking for those tags though the data was there somewhere.
Could be my memory failing but I seem to recall that being the case and it required an update or two before things worked the same again. |

->> Debbie go to Edit--->Pref--->IPTC/XMP in the right half "When writing IPTC/XMP check your settings.
Mine are set to:
"Add emmedded IPTC" ticked on Add embedded IPTC and Add embedded IPTC4XMP and If sidecar exists add..... |

| ->> You could put the info into one of the images, then copy the IPTC info (left click I believe), hightlight the rest of the images, then past the IPTC information to the selected images. |

->> OK some more questioning.....
Is the HD that the images are on connected to the PC or the MAC?
Are you editing on the machine that the drive is physically connected to?
Are you saying that while sitting at your PC, if you caption a file on a drive that is either in, or physically cabled to, the PC that when opening Elements 7 the caption is missing and that opening PM the caption is back??
I know that I sound dense but I want to get a few points cleared up... Also which OS on the PC? |

| ->> I second George's step. Run it in reverse. Elements 7 may not read legacy IPTC fields and use it own propriety data fields in the file header. Are you working NEF files or jpegs? |

->> hi all,
I tried running in reverse and the same thing happens.
The is happening with both JPEGs and NEFs.
Eric-it is a tiny netbook that I am TRYING to figure out. I am a MAC gal and this is a PC-one I am hoping to sell (PC's and me don't get along :) |

->> Debra, have you checked the forums at Photo Mechanic's site?
http://forums.camerabits.com/
I just did a quick search for "IPTC" and several threads came up. If you can't find your specific problem you can post your question there, and there's a good chance you will get an answer. I've heard many people say that Kirk, the owner and programmer, checks the forums often. |

->> Debbie what I was trying to get at (this happened here) is whether the computer that you are doing the captioning on has write permissions on the volume. If the files are on your Mac and the netbook only has read permissions PM won't tell you that the write failed.
Had it happen here, my wife edited some 1500 images color coding, captioning etc. She was working from her desktop (PC) accessing the HD on my machine. The glitch was that windows by default sets up the share as read only. So all her work was being tossed without notice. If you are sharing the drive make sure that the share properties give the netbook write permission. |

->> I had similar issues with Photo Mechanics --> Lightroom.
I found that the problem was related to the fact that IPTC metadata can be written do both the image file and/or a "sidecar" XMP-file.
To resolve this i had to change some settings i PM.
You can find how i did it here:
