Dooms Day in Sydney
Angus Mordant, Student/Intern
Sydney | NSW Australia | Australia | Posted: 8:40 AM on 09.23.09
->> hey guys, would love some C&C on some of my images from this morning that can be seen on my members page. The same weather is due to hit on Saturday so i will hopefully add some more images then.

Thanks

PS: Made for an interesting day with over 500 fire alarms set off in the city, along with several calls to emergency services asking if it was the end of the world.

->> I think it has happened once in many years, happened once about 15 years ago but on a much smaller scale and i think that was mostly smoke with a bit of dust. This today was 1000 tonnes of dust landing on Sydney. The 500 calls where Automatic Alarms, there was even more 000 (Our 911 equivalent) calls for various things, people thinking it was major bush fires etc...

->> What a cool opportunity for some interesting and artistic shots. Although camera protection must be difficult from all the sand and dust in the air. I am surprised Hollywood isn't rushing to Sydney to film some end of the world scene so they can do it without having pay to create it on set or with CG.

1, 2, and 6 are best
I'd focus on what's disappearing into the haze, otherwise, to some, it might just look like you toned the images orange.

Maybe call around and see if you can get into any high rises
If nothing else, go up and buy a really exy drink in the Sydney tower
http://www.summitrestaurant.com.au/ and snap some pics.

Another idea -- get onto Getty/Corbis and look for really nice scenic/postcard-y shots in nice weather. Then find out where they were shot from and re-shoot in this weather. It'd make for an amazing side-by side... I can see that looking really spiffy in the Morning Herald.

->> We get these sand/dust storms here in Cairo about 2 or 3 times a year. The season is called Khamseen and is supposed to last a few weeks. So far we have only experienced it for a day or two at a time. Dust everywhere, you can shut your doors and windows, it gets in. But it makes for interesting pictures.

->> Very cool, Angus. Thanks for sharing them. How about some detail shots of the dust that has settled on cars, bikes, etc., or worked its way into nooks and crannies of walls, sidewalks, etc.? Some closeups of people with protective masks on? I dunno.
