->> I was inspired to put up my own link by Bruce Ely's post about the column he and Jamie Francis have begun. Specifically their slideshow about Unity's 8 man football team. Very nice piece.

Earlier this month I put together a video on Civic Stadium, a historic sports venue here in Eugene, that faces an uncertain future after the minor league Emeralds Baseball team decided to move out.

I have been learning and doing video for awhile now, mostly sports and mostly Oregon football features, but this was the first project that I took some time to polish before publishing.
Thanks for letting me plug my work. |

->> Chris- REALLY nice piece! I just finished watching it and your video makes me wish I could go see an Emeralds game up there.
Well done! |

| ->> Chris, that really takes me back. Between Ems games and HS baseball (and soccer in the outfield) I spent a lot of time at ol' civic stadium. Would be a shame to see it go. I really liked the mix of stills and video and the use of time-lapse. |

->> nice close chris! done so well, i could smell the place.
i had a great summer selling beer there in 1989. what great memories of a community ball field. Git Yer Warm, Flat, Beer Here! The staff had a good time. Among other things, another set of jobs lost...sad, but elegantly recorded by you. |

->> Great work, Chris. Reminds me of Ainsworth Field (supposedly a site where Babe Ruth homered during his career) in my hometown.
What camera(s) did you use to shoot this? Some of those detail shots were absolutely beautiful. |

->> Thanks everybody, I really appreciate the feedback. It was a fun project to work on. As you saw in the clip, there is a movement afoot to save the venue. We will see if they can come up with the necessary $$$. The local school district owns the property, but is not in a position to do much work on it. One upside to the bad economy is that no developers have stepped forward with a wrecking ball.
To Ethan: I used a Canon HV20 for everything but the crowd time elapse images. I shot those with at 1D Mark II, a 15mm and a MultiMax set to intervalometer.
Foremost I wanted the piece to be a homage to baseball, but my other idea was to approach the filming in the same way that I would my still photography, that is, composing a scene as a still image, while letting the sequence play out within that composition. Of course I did not invent the idea, but I am having fun putting these and other ideas to work.
One of the aspects of video, or sound slideshows for that matter, that I have come to appreciate is the ability to put together a much richer sense of place than has been possible with essays published in the limited space afforded in recent years by newsprint. |
