Canon Shutter Replacement $400...
Jason Hunter, Photographer, Assistant

->> I just sent my 1D Mark IIN into Canon to replace the shutter. It cost $405 including shipping. It was about $160 for parts, $200 for labor and the rest was tax and shipping. That seemed pretty high. A friend of mine paid $250. What have your experiences been with shutter replacement at Canon? (note: this was with a CPS silver discount).

->> Jason,

I just had mine replaced a month or so ago. It was at first covered under a warranty and a day or so later it was then not covered..

Long story short after talking to someone very high up it was reduced to just parts minus CPS %.

But without all of that it was going to cost me near 400 dollars before my CPS discount!

->> First camera: $489 w/shipping CPS member - 85k clicks. They also replaced the top cover plate and standard CLA.

Second camera: Shutter and CLA $345 w/shipping - requested they not replace the top cover when I sent it in. Camera only had 75k in clicks.

I've had two 1D classics and have yet to pay to replace (knock on wood) a shutter in those (yet).

I've yet to have a MarkII that went to the rated 150K before failure. Both were out of warranty. The happy part the cameras came back like it FOB good to go for another two years of work.

->> Just had my 1Ds MII shutter replaced in July, it was $251.38 with the gold membership. But, the same shutter was replaced by CPS in Jan. of 2008 and that time it cost $473. Parts were listed at $158 for each repair. I have to admit I was a little disappointed that the shutter only lasted 2 years, especially on a camera that I only ever use in single shot mode on portrait assignments.

->> Wow, these prices are all over the place. You would think there were be a standard price for a shutter replacement. Without the CPS discount it sounded like the total with shipping was going to be about $490.

Dave: I just sent mine to Jersey as well, next time I'll tell them that I know you, maybe that will help:)

Steven: could you pass on the info for the third party repair facility? I'll probably go that route in the future.

Yeah, I'd be interested in that info, too. It has been two years since my last shutter replacement and I'm no where near 30K worth of clicks either. Based on Brian and my own experience, it looks like the first shutter replacement on your account is billed at price around $450. The next time it drops to something around $350. Third shutter replacement may cost you around $250?????

->> I have had to have the shutter in my Mark II N replaced twice. After the first replacement it only lasted a year (almost exactly). I remember the first costing around $250 and then when I had to get it replaced again it was somewhere around $350. I sent it to NJ both times and it did come back pretty quickly though.

I've never personally used them but know several of their customers. If I remember correctly they did all the repairs for the AP in the area too.

->> What kind of shutter failure signs are people seeing with the II/IIN cameras?

If it helps anyone, the shutter in one of my two IINs started failing around 70K but I wouldn't have noticed it if I hadn't shot between 1/4000 and 1/8000 (in order to use a fast lens wide open in direct sun without a ND filter). Those frames appeared underexposed as well as unevenly exposed due to the shutter blades not moving correctly. Right around that time I shot a football game and noticed random infrequent frames about 1-1.5 stops underexposed (shutter speed would have been in the 1/2000 range). At first I thought it was the aperture in the lens malfunctioning, but then discovered the high shutter speed underexposure problem and got it serviced while still just barely under warranty.

FWIW, I recently sent in a Mark III for the Err. 99 problem and got an estimate from Canon CANADA for:

CG2-1899-000 SHUTTER ASS'Y 1 $152.15
CG2-2135-010 MIRROR BOX ASS'Y 1 $200.83

grand total: $532.07

But that was before pointing out that there is a service advisory offering warranty coverage for Mark III's with the Err. 99 problem, which they eventually agreed to honor despite their claims that the camera had above normal actuation numbers for its age.

Interestingly about a year ago when I wanted to put the Mark IINs up for sale, I asked Canon Canada for the service history, including actuation totals, and was informed that they no longer place much emphasis on actuation numbers when judging shutter condition (IIRC). Seems to contradict their marketing material...
