->> OK, I know that everybody is going to hammer me for ever leaving anything in my car overnight. But, I live in a very safe neighborhood, and have left stuff in my car overnight lots of times. But, it only takes once to really screw things up for you.
Stolen were:
Canon 1D Mark III - serial no 510794
Canon 1D Mark II - serial no 235308
Canon 400/2serials.8 Series II - missing serial no, but it had a broken screw on the hood and has a black knee brace around it used to hold the hood on
Canon 70-200/2.8 IS - serial no 231964
Canon 24-70/2.8 - serial no 218410
Please keep an eye out for these serial numbers
If anybody recalls taking photos of me with my 400, please let me know, I may need to prove to the insurance company that I owned it. Thanks |

->> nuts after I posted that I realized that not only did they take my Gitzo carbon fibre monopod, but they took a Mountainsmith Tour bag with the Aquatech covers for a 400 and a 70-200, along with my brand new only used once waterproof jacket I got at REI.
*sigh* |

->> I feel really bad for you. Nothing is safe in your car. Some years back all my camera gear was stolen from the trunk of my car in Miami in broad daylight in a "nice safe area." I was eating lunch - I was in the restaurant no more than an hour. And last Saturday in probably the "safest place in the country," Venice, Florida, 3 cars were broken into in broad daylight at 8:00 am - we were on a training ride that didn't last more than an hour - when we got back - 3 broken windows, 3 different cars, 3 purses belonging to the ladies on the training ride were gone.
I'll keep an eye out for your stuff. Good luck and I really hope you have insurance.

->> For what its worth Nick,
One night my home was robbed, took laptops, xbox, etc.. while we were all alseep. Only reason why my MkII and gear was not snatched was because it was in my car.
So go figure. |

->> I did a search on ebay of canon 1d being sold out of AZ this one was opened just a couple days ago (9-13 at 10pm) and says it's a "pre-sale" item. I'm not sure what that term means (maybe he/she listed it before he/she got it?) I asked the seller what they meant.

| ->> I only live in places where I can put my car in a garage. And even then I never leave gear in it over night. And I put my bag in the rear of my apt, in the back of a closet... out of the way; someone would have to search for a long time to find my gear even if they did break in. You are right, and with all due respect, it only takes once to bring your entire business to it's knees, insurance or not. Man, I feel bad for you. That's a lot of gear to lose. |

->> If you live long enough this will happen to you, to everyone, it all comes down to how well you are prepared.
I've been hit by car burglars twice in 33 years and both times I was very, very lucky.
A trunk inside one's car trunk, chained or cabled to the framing in the car's trunk, will certainly slow down smash and grab thieves. But one must be disciplined to always have the gear stowed and locked before leaving the job at the end of the day, so that one doesn't stand in the driveway or a restaurant parking lot arranging bags and gear and generally attracting attention.
Early in my career I drove a pickup and had not a lot of gear. I carried everything in a laundry basket with some towels on top and around the sides. My neighbors in the apartment complex must have thought I did laundry everyday, but no one knew I was carrying camera gear back and forth between my place and my truck. Nor did I leave it in my truck as I had no way at the time to really secure it.
I wish you every success in getting your gear back, it was very smart of you to have it insured. Too many people don't take that seriously. |

| ->> Years ago, while in college I had items stolen from the back seat of my car. In a small camera bag I had a few brushes and some old tubes of acrylic paint and in a diaper bag I had my camera. The diaper bag with camera was never touched. |

->> Several years a visitor was in my driveway and I couldn't get into the garage so I left my truck on the street figuring I would park it later but then forgot and went to bed.
The next morning I was informed my driver's side window had been smashed. Then I remembered I had left a new Nikon D2x on the passenger seat.
Expecting the worse, I dashed to the truck and thankfully found the camera was still there.
Several car windows had been smashed that evening by drive-by teens celebrating prom night. |

->> Brian...
Ahh grasshopper... The address I show on my profile is only my mail drop address; not where I hang my hat...or store my photo gear! I NEVER use my actual living address. I haven't done that for 15 years. Not even with the IRS.
Nor do I put giant posters on my car telling the world that I run a photo business like I see some people do. "HEY!! I'M A PHOTOGRAPHER!!! LIKE, HEY, I MIGHT HAVE VALUABLE GEAR INSIDE IF THIS CAR!!! HELLO THIEVES! LOOK AT ME!" Where's the megaphone? |

->> As I am dealing with my insurance companies I have some advice for EVERYONE:
Make sure your Itemized List of Equipment with Serial Numbers and CURRENT REPLACEMENT COSTS is up to date.
I have encountered a major hurdle because my equipment lists were out of date, I had one camera and one lens that were not on my ITEMIZED LIST, and none of my prices were current since the PRICES of lenses went up this year. My insurance adjustor stated that he had to give me the lesser of the Itemized List or the Prices he finds at Samys or Calumet.
I'm taking a loss because my price list was NOT up to date.
On a bright note though, I do have an insurance rider on my homeowners insurance for up to $15K of personal camera gear (up to $3K per single item). So, I'm hoping that what the business insurance won't cover, the homeowner's will help take care of. I will let you know.
There should be a class or seminar on these type of things, I'm learning (at great financial cost it seems) good lessons here.
SO BE CAREFUL, PUT YOUR GEAR AWAY EVERY NIGHT, AND UPDATE YOUR EQUIPMENT LISTS WITH CURRENT REPLACEMENT PRICES!!!! |

| ->> Nick, I just took your advice and listed my camera equipment and serial numbers and replacement pricing. I've put the list in a safe place I don't have as much gear as you do, but I do not feel like going through the hassle of replacing it. I hate thieves. I know it's a pain but it sounds like you'll be up and running fairly soon. |

->> Nick, man so bummed for you but so glad insurace sounds like it will all get covered...merry xmas!
Hope everyone is taking notes and making their itemized lists...adn getting insurance!
On that note I keep all my gear (with exception of a few stands and backdrops) in a 35 cu/ft, 500 pound, gun safe....and within that, and most importantly, I keep another fire safe with all my backup(duplicate) hard drives. lol, not even my wife knows the combination!
My gear never stays in the car, and rarely is out of my sight, or off my person for that matter. ALL my gear is insured cause if they put a gun to my head, its theirs! Call me paraniod and i'll gladly agree but I've heard all the horor stories and I refuse to be one of them! |

Sorry about your loss, Nick. It happened to me 12 years ago and it still makes me angry when I think about it. |
