| ->> I have an old MAC that has a password set, and I don't know what it is so I can't load software. Does anyone know how to delete an old administrators name and change it if you don't have the old password? |

->> Debra:
Try entering a series of zeros, ie, 0000 or 00000 as a default password.
That worked for me one time.

->> I think to change the password without knowing it you need an OS Install Disk. It does not have to be the recovery disk specific to that machine, but needs to be an OS disk.
If it's a laptop you may be able to take it to the Apple Store for a reset, but expect some questions as to why you don't have the install disks. |

->> Sorry, Didn't ready the 2nd post.
If your not able to use the single user mode
you could always go to apple retail store or a local store than can help you to restore your password using their OS install disk. |

->> If you have another system disc, doesn't have to be the original ones that come with a Mac just a full install disc, you can run password recovery. I just did that with my laptop using the Snow Leopard disc. And what that actually did was it showed me what the Administrator's username was since I only use one password with my laptops (so I knew that).
Problem was that I finally installed Snow Leopard on an external Firewire drive but couldn't change account permissions since it wanted the current administrator's name and password. It just came up with two blank boxes for the name and password. Turns out the Admin's name was System Administrator and the password was the one I normally use.
So if that's what's going on, you need the admin password try System Administrator |
