| ->> I haven't had any problems with snow leopard so far. 10.6.1 updated fine without a hitch. I've been running SL since the beta that was out this summer. It even updated nicely on my little hackbook, without having to reinstall anything. |

Anyone else?

->> Even with 10.6.1 I'm having issues with SMTP servers and gmail, as well as a Canon wifi printer. Even connected via USB it keeps failing to communicate. Luckily I can print from my older Powerbook.
This wasn't an upgrade, new MBP came with it installed. I'd listen to Jim and let a few more bugs get ironed out! :)

| ->> I just want to say, for anyone thinking of upgrading. don't. wait a few more releases. Thus far, snow leopard is the biggest pile of dog crap I've ever seen. half my programs crash with random errors, cs3 crashes all the time, on multiple computers, so many software issues I can't even think straight. I'm actually going to spend a day reloading all my computers back to 10.5. wish i would have listened to Jim. |

| ->> I don't think snow leopard is as bad as people are making it to be. If you update your software regularly and stick to the latest versions of CS etc, you should be fine. I haven't had a single problem running SL in the last 4 months I've had it. I'm running an iMac Intel 2gb of RAM, 500gb HD, ATI video card, CS4, newest version of PM, Quicktime X, FCS3, etc. No problems at all. |

->> Can anyone speak to the supposed speed increases in the new OS? Are PM/LR/CS4 running significantly faster?
And, regardless, I'm waiting. |

->> Michael,
I wouldn't say any applications are running like that are running faster, but they do run smoothly. Lightroom is snappy, especially with the latest update, but my library is fairly small. All of CS4 runs just like it did on 10.5.6, which was the last update I had before going to SL. Expose is faster, spotlight is faster, spaces is faster (though I don't use spaces regularly.But did activate it while I was testing it.)
Hope that helps a little, feel free to shoot me an email if you have specific questions. |

->> I'm almost certain that 10.6 killed the battery in my MBP.
It was fine a month ago, lasting nearly 2:30. Now, it lasts 20 minutes at best.
It's very frustrating. |

->> Tom,
If you don't have it, I recommend installing the iStat Pro widget. Besides other useful info, it tells you battery info like how many recharge cycles, the battery's health in a percentage, and the usual remaining battery info. If your battery has a lot of cycles (over 300) then it is potentially a legitimate time to get a new battery. If there are few cycles then there may be an underlying issue.
Additionally, I have found (now that I am on my 3rd MBP battery in 2 years) that leaving the battery in while the computer is plugged in and is doing a lot of processing which creates a lot of heat right next to the battery kills the battery's cells. Once some of the cells are killed, the battery takes a nose dive in performance. I literally had a battery with 90%+ health one week and 30% the next. Now I remove the battery if I am going to be plugged in for a while or while editing video and the battery life has been a non issue. |

->> I have iStat, and that's the main way I know my battery has some bad cells. (I like being able to see the temps- that's cool.)
The frustrating part is that the battery's "health" fluctuates from 80% to 20% to 50%... You get the idea. It said last night that I had 2 hours left and died after 20 minutes, with no warning. Even the little green lights on the battery indicate it's still full. It's my third or fourth one in three years as well. Very, very annoying. It's probably the worst battery life I've experienced with any device.
Never thought about removing the battery while using it under a heavy load- that's a good idea... |

CS3 does what I need so I'm loath to spend the money to upgrade just to keep Adobe's profits high. If they hadn't changed the plug-in structure to force me to upgrade to CS3 (the 5D plug-in doesn't work with anything less) I'd be happily running CS2 right now.
Trailing edge technology. It's old but it works. |

->> Jim,
The technology may work, but if you want optimal performance with the latest OS updates, then it's wise to keep up to date on your software as well. Don't want too? Then stick with leopard or tiger. They're stable and work fine.
Meanwhile, people shouldn't complain when they're software they have isn't compatible, the reason for updates isn't always to keep "Adobe's profits high" it's to take advantage of the newer hardware and software, as well as incorporate features that users want. |

I want a program that will do a good job at a price that doesn't offend me.
I want an OS that will not crash under normal daily use or stop me from printing to an industry-standard printer that I've owned for two years.
I don't want to be forced to purchase an upgrade to a program just after I've spent thousands of dollars on a camera upgrade.
I don't really care if it takes 2.8 seconds to open a file instead of 2.2 seconds.
I will complain if new software isn't compatible with old software and yes, the reason for many upgrades is to keep the software company's profits high. Some may not yet understand the realities of the market. I do. |
