Strange Looking Image in NYT

The plane of focus in this image doesn't look natural to me (at least not with the zooms that I use). Anyone with fast primes care to weigh in on this? |

->> It could be a prime - like an 85/1.4 at around f/2 or so. A 35/f2 would also kinda get you there if the kid leaned into the focal plane just right.
But you could also do this with a tilt-shift. I use a Nikon 85PC and can do this effect pretty easily. You flop the focal plane over so it's lined up with his teeth, then you open it up to somewhere around f/4. It's the same basic technique that you use to do "Toy City" stuff. |

Either way nothing looks wonky about it. Just good use of primes or a tilt-shift...
You should do some primes, Allen! Lots of fun! |

->> Allen,
check out this website. http://www.lensbaby.com/lenses.php?gclid=CMuggvXW7ZwCFQ0aawod6G-cjw
Great little tool for photography that looks similar. Great for portraits, weddings and commercial work. They have a gallery on the website that shows what this product can do. I've rented one before and they are great. |

->> Allen,
As much as I love my three primary fast zooms, nothing matches my 14f2.8, 24f1.4, 24f3.5 TS-E, 50f1.4, 85f1.2 and macro-tubes for sharpness and matching the vision I have in my head. The LensBaby Composure is also an awesome tool! |

->> I'm much more concerned about the page redirect to a virus scan company emanating from that page.
It either snuck in under the radar or the NYT needs to tighten up its ad acceptance policies.

| ->> looks a little wide of a perspective for an 85 or even a 50, but I could see a 35 1.4 or some such ... just very shallow dof for a wide though ... have to try some experiments. could be a tilt shift wide ... that would be effective. |

| ->> I'm so used to the depth of field characteristics of an APC sensor camera (meaning they have tons of it) that when I do something with similar depth of field to the photo in question with a 17-35 2.8 on a full frame D3 it kind of startles me. I'd say that was easily done with a an XXmm f1.2 or f1.8 on a newer full frame sensor body. |

The depth of field is so shallow that only his teeth are in focus.
Probably a 1.2 |
