Video Conversion DVD to 480p/720p or 1080p video files

->> I am working on a project which includes a two hour video segment which was encoded to a DVD and it requires editing but the original footage has been either misplaced or written over. I have been looking for a software program for PC that will allow me to rip the dvd into a better quality video file such as a *.dv or *.mp4 file (not for ipod) that I will be able to use to conduct the necessary edits. I already looked at a few programs but I can't seem to find one for my needs as most convert them for ipod.

Any suggestions are welcome

->> i don't know if they make a pc version, but streamclip is a mac program that converts almost anything to anything- as long as you have the codecs in your library.

->> Keep in mind your DVD is already encoded to a DVD format and will only be 480p when coming off the disc. I wouldn't suggest up-rezzing that to 1080p as the quality would be horrible.

Use Handbrake and rip it to 480p, edit the file (I'm assuming it's just timeline edits and not editing of the actual footage quality), and export back out to 480p.

->> Thank you all for the information, I will take a look at all three and yes Mike I just have to edit the file not enhance or improve the footage quality.
