->> question..since these 2 cameras have the same sensor, would it make sense to keep the D90 or go for a D300s.
Other than the HD video and silent shutter mode, is it worth it? |

->> Totally depends what role you need the camera to fill. The D300s its a bit larger and heavier and can do 7fps, has a better AF system etc. Its a great all around body and an excellent tool for extra reach for sports.
The D90 is smaller/lighter and has a slower frame rate, 4 FPS I think, a lower end AF system and is more of a consumer targeted body. It can still take great pictures though, has all the controls you need and IQ wise is basically the same as the D300s.
The D90 makes for a wonderful travel camera or anytime you need IQ and control but in the most compact package possible. I wouldn't wear a D90 around my shoulder with a 70-200 as a second body for a football game though. I might wear one with a wide angle lens around my neck as a 3rd body to supplement my other gear.
Probably cost you $1000 to upgrade as well. Perhaps worth it if the D90 is letting you down in terms of its performance.
What role is the D90 playing for you right now and do you see a D300s and its additional features proving useful in the photography you ? |

->> Hi Jeff,
I find the d90 a little noisy at hi ISO-even around 800
would the 300s be the same? When shooting RAW, is the buffer a little better? |

->> I'm pretty sure the D90 and the D300s are using the same sensor, or at least a sensor that is extremely similar.
I had a D300, which did use a slightly older sensor design than the D90, D5000 etc and frankly found it indistinguishable from the newer ones. I don't think you'd see any differences that would matter with the D300s. Its not being marketing on the basis of improved IQ or anything.
I think rather than spending $1800 for a D300s, you'd be far better served going for a D700, which you could pick up for maybe $500 more. That is where your going to see a huge increase in high ISO performance. I think the D700/D3 is pretty noise free at ISO800, still amazing at ISO1600 and perfectly usable at ISO3200. I even shoot at 6400 on a regular basis rather than using flash. Typically don't use NR on those images either if just for newsprint. |
