| ->> Still it's kind of funny that a Nikon shooter got blasted by a cannon and shot by a Cannon (check the credit). |

->> Years ago (I don't want to admit how long) at a UT game the Horns were close to scoring. I took a spot right in front of Little Smokey (the cannon at the time) and one of the guys came over and suggested I move out of the way because it would be loud.
I slid over a few yards but anther photographer knelt in the same spot I had been. Before they could warn him the Horns scored and the cannon fired. That poor other guy keeled over sideways onto the ground. Little Smokey fired 4 black power shotgun shells so the percussion was pretty good.
It was actually quite humorous. |

->> Yeah, Jay. Up here there are a couple of schools that use freight train air horns. I don't always notice them until it's too late. It'll make you jump right out of your skin, yikes!

->> I know the feeling well..
Before I go any further, let me say that I have a 95% hearing loss in both ears.
Last year was my first year to shoot games after a 10-year hiatus as a personal caregiver.
I went to the old college stadium to shoot a game. I wasn't aware that the college Army ROTC shoots off a cannon. It's not on the field, so you can't see it.. It's hidden away in one of the openings between the stands in the end zone..
After the home team scored a touchdown, the cannon went off. I could barely hear it, but the shock waves shook me.. It was one of those moments where you wished you were wearing Depends... |

->> Similar situation with the Cleveland Air Show. No canon, but the Thunderbirds or the Blue Angels, whichever group is performing. Most of the show takes place running east/west along the shore of Lake Erie, but every year, one run, by one of the single jets comes from the South, from behind the city skyline and scares the s##T out of everyone! You know it's going to happen, but you never quite know when and nobody ever catches it photographically because it happens so fast! You'd have to skip the rest of the show and just wait for that shot in order to capture it. It's an extremely low altitude fly-by and everyone jumps out of their skin.
I was shooting the show yesterday and missed it completely!! |

| ->> Somebody must have given him the earplugs - which would mean that he would have known about the 'canon' - so why would he stand there? (I wonder if he's saying the same thing right now?) |

->> Kolman:
I know the feeling.. The USAF Thunderbirds performed at the open house/air show of our local AFB in April.. Those practice runs were loud!!
When I hear about jets being loud and flying low, I always think about George C. Scott's line in the movie "Dr. Strangelove".. When the President asks him if it's possible for a jet to get through the Soviet air defense network..
The response of Scott's character, General Turgidson:
"If the pilot's good, see, I mean if he's reeeally sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low... oh you oughta see it sometime. It's a sight. A big plane like a '52... varrrooom! Its jet exhaust... frying chickens in the barnyard!"... |

->> Last year I got blasted point blank by some moronic humongous air horn contraption at a high school playoff game. And then he kept on blasting it far longer and more frequent than was appropriate. I really felt like kicking that guy's ass. And he was an older guy. Probably near deaf himself.
I'll take the canon over that insidious evil thing any day. |
