Inside the Box rule for H.S. games in Arkansas?

->> I was told that the Arkansas Activities Assoc. has established a new rule that only team players and coaches and those associated with the team itself may be inside the players box. I was told that a home team was penalized for a photographer being inside the box last Friday night. I can't find that anywhere and was wondering if anyone might know if this is true.

| ->> It is a NCAA rule change for this year, requiring schools to better police their team area. Texas, which uses NCAA football rules, exempts schools from the team area restrictions. The NCAA and National Federation(rules for most high school athletics) is constantly trying to make sports safer. The sidelines are often overcrowded. Many photographers(I speak form both the sports photographer and referee viewpoint) are narrowly concentrating on getting the best photo and often do not see the added danger they put themselves, the players, coached and officials in. |

->> Mike, I had no problems during my first week of work, covering two high school games and one junior high game. It all depends upon who the officials are. Luckily, I've had three crews whom I've known over the years. I do know the officials are told to keep everyone back as far as they can on the sidelines but that isn't always possible, depending upon how much room a team has on the fields.
Mark, while I'm taking notes and shooting photos, I make sure I stay out of the ways of the officials. Maybe I miss a photo but I don't want to be the cause of any problems. Luckily, I have a good relationship with the officials in my area of Arkansas as well as the three home schools I cover.
Arkansas does not use NCAA rules. They use the rules set forth by the National Federation of High Schools. Like i said, I always try my best to stay out of the way. I've had one incident in the past 15 years and I won't go into that. For the most part, the officials have a job to do, the players and coaches have a job to do and we as journalists have a job to do and it is getting increasingly more difficult to do that in all levels of athletic competition. With that said, again, I do my best to watch out for everyone and thing involved when covering HS football. |

| ->> Thanks for the info, I had no problem Friday night myself but I was told this was a new rule. I generally try to stay outside the box myself, usually just passing thru behind the benches. They made it sound like we couldn't even pass through the box. Thanks again. |
