Snow Leopard install fail

->> Just tried installing Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro and it went through like 99% of the way then came up with a failure message. It said to try installing again, I got the same failure message. It must have updated the EFI firmware on the MBP since I can't boot off the 10.5 Original disc that came with the laptop.
So now I'm stuck with my laptop in non-bootable condition. I was going to install 10.5 on an external FW drive to boot off but with EFI changed it's a no-go.
Trying install attempt #3 booting off the Snow Leopard disc in an external DVD FW drive. I'll let you folks know how it goes.
I've heard of two reports of install problems.
1. Some SuperDrives are failing in MacBook Pros so the install doesn't go properly.
2. Some Snow Leopard discs have a defective second layer and need to be replaced (note that Snow Leopard is sold out so replacement will take quite awhile to happen).
Be careful if you're doing an install on your main computer folks. I'd link the screens from my MBP but I'm using my iPhone to post this and that's a bit too much for copy and pasting. |

->> No local Apple Store unless I fly, swim or walk on water there.
MacBook Pro now rendered useless. Can't boot, can't install 10.5 due to firmware change, can't install Snow Leopard due to defective disc. Install attempt #3 via external DVD drive also failed.
Rookie mistake installing a new OS on the Friday night of a 3 day weekend. So much for getting any work done. |

| ->> Will it boot in target disk mode? Maybe you can get things going again if you try to connect it to another Mac via firewire and installing 10.5 back on it from that computer. It's worth a shot. |

| ->> Call Apple since you bought a good version of Leopard they will give you phone support on the install of the software. |

| ->> Baron any chance of finding an external cd drive to try the install on? |

->> Would installing from an external FireWire/USB drive or large thumb drive/compact flash card be an option? If so, you can "copy" the installation DVD to that and install from there:

Either way, it may help you diagnose your problems. Bad media or bad optical drives. |

->> I don't have a 2nd Mac around at the moment so using target mode won't work, besides I'm pretty sure the data on the drive is safe but it just has a screwed-up system. I also have a Time Machine backup from the previous day.
As for trying another drive that's one of the first things I did.
I've tried the SL install via internal optical drive to internal HD, no good.
Tried external optical drive SL to internal HD, fail.
Tried internal optical installing SL to external FW drive, fail.
Tried external optical to install SL to external FW HD, fail.
Tried booting the laptop off the original discs that came with the MacBook Pro, Leopard, fail. It gives me the universal cancel symbol (the circle with the angled hash mark) above the segmented boot-up spinner, fail.
Tried swapping RAM chips to the original Apple supplied chipss, install fail.
I'm pretty sure it's a defective install disc and initiated a return and replacement with Amazon.com |

->> Baron,
have you tried setting your mbp to target disk mode and doing a clean install of Leopard via another computer? What about having a second Hard Drive (External) and using that as a boot disk. that's what I;ve done in the
aloha from oahu. |

->> Finally had to use system disk restore from the Snow Leopard disc and using my Time Machine backup. Took over 5 hours but it completed.
MacBook Pro still wouldn't boot-up properly so I zapped PRAM and that allowed me to boot back into my restored 10.5 system with my computer back. Computer is now re-importing emails, had to resync keychain items and I'm running repair permissions just in case.
When I get the new disc from Amazon I'm going to install that on the external Firewire drive before trying it on the internal. |

->> An interesting note about this terrible Snow Leopard install experience is that Apple has changed the procedure for a System install.
For previous systems (I just did a 10.5 install on an external FW HD as backup) the installer would check the install DVD for consistency before installing. This check takes awhile and even has a button in case someone wants to skip the step.
Snow Leopard doesn't check, it just takes the integrity of the DVD on blind faith.
If you folks are going to install Snow Leopard I'd suggest trying it to a connected Firewire drive first to test the disc, otherwise keep your fingers crossed. |

| ->> you can rip the install DVD to a HD and have it check the image for consistency if needed though. Though I haven't had a problem with any installs of snow leopard so far. Glad to hear that things are working now though |

| ->> I just noticed that the auto spellcheck isn't working very well with photo mechanic since I updated to OSX 10.6. I never noticed any issues before installing the new OS. It seems to only recognize every 2nd or 3rd misspelled word. Spell check seems to work well in all other capacities... Any ideas? |
