->> This may sound stupid but reading the latest sportsshooter news letter (Which i love BTW, Thanks to everyone involved!) i see the word "tailgating" referenced a lot and was wondering what meaning you guys give to the word. Down here in Australia it is used to refer to driving too close the car infront...
Thanks |

->> Angus, the term refers to having a party in the parking lot of a sporting event. Tailgating means the same thing if the police ticket you while driving, but if you're going to a tailgate at LandShark Stadium, you're going to a place that has plenty of bar-b-ques fired up and working, lots and lots of food, and large amounts of liquor usually.. and who knows what else.
Hope this helps.

| ->> Darren has it spot on... pubs just outside, usually there is a nice pub crawl (Making ones way from one pub to another, have seen it resort to a crawl before...) on the way home and a barbie (BBQ) at home before hand... Light a barbie up in a carpark and the boys in blue will shut you down pretty darn quick... Infact around summer BBQs are even illegal in parts... |

You also probably have decent public transportation like trains and buses...something many cities here in America don't have. So we take our cars with us wherever we go, and therefore have a place to "tailgate". :-) |

->> Angus:
Here's a link to New York Times article about tailgating.
http://travel.nytimes.com/2006/09/29/travel/escapes/29grove.html
Tailgating is especially big on college campuses in the U.S. Often, the stadium/campus is a bit isolated from surrounding neighborhoods, so participants bring their own party with them. A lot of times, we don't have, as Darren White said, "pubs next to the grounds"..
Also, alcohol is not permitted on a lot of college campuses--especially in the southeastern U.S., so people bring their own. For the most part, authorities look the other way.
It's hard to fully grasp the experience just from reading about it.. You have to experience it in person to get a true sense of the scene. |

To our Aussie members, My deepest sympathys. I'm so, so very sorry.
"we have pubs next to the grounds instead" Jealous.
Round here tailgating becomes an community meal and informal cooking contest as everyone shares and try's to out do the others.
If ya'll are ever in the states in the fall you MUST check it out, hell I know people who never even make it inside for the actual game they are so involved in the parking lot party.. |
