->> Jeff:
I must have been asleep the past few years because I've missed your volleyball interests. I love the sport. I love to see good images of the sport. I love to play. My daughter plays. She's getting batter. The thing I love about Volleyball is the fact that the action is everywhere. To shoot really good volleyball a photographer has to be thinking and alert. They have to stay focused both mentally and physically and very anticipatory.
You shot some nice moments sir. I think using a 200 f 2.0 or a 300 f 2.0 with an aperature setting of f 2.0 might really help but, it seems that your sense of anticipation is on the money buddy.
I hate looking at pictures of volleyball that show people serving at the service line or standing around with their hands on their knees. My daughter shoots those kinds of pictures with her point and shoot. She's not a photographer. There's a difference between volleyball images and shnapshots, at least in my mind.
Volleyball should be used as a training exercise for photographers. It's damn hard to shoot really good volleyball images. |

| ->> I shot some volleyball last night at the high school level. Some pics are here: http://www.sportsshooter.com/rabrams/volleyball/index.html. I used to coach at the youth level (7th/8th grade) and have always enjoyed the sport. Don't have a lot of big hitters in my area, but the game always have at least some action as you can in my pics. |

| ->> Hey gang, I loved shooting Div. 1 volleyball at Arizona. Many of the top teams came to Tucson to play, like Stanford, USC, Washington and I had the opportunity to photograph Kim Glass, who was on the 2008 Olympic volleyball team. I put up a few shots here:www.pbase.com/imager1/gallery/best_of_volleyball |

Some of us shot volleyball with a......manual focus camera. |

->> Alan,
I am sure your images will turn out great.
A few months ago I was lucky enough to be able to shoot from the catwalk of our arena at Ball State. A few of the images are on my member page if you want to see what I got. Volleyball is probably my favorite sport to shoot at well.
I am actually shooting my first game of the high school season tonight. I am pretty pumped.

I second what Rick says. The erratic and even violent movement makes volleyball a whole new type of challenge.
Ian, some of my stuff is still shot manual focus (I started that way, and while the net tends to confuse the AF sensors, my mind is not so easily confused--at least when it comes to focusing). |

->> I'll say one thing and that is I really appreciate well-coached players who have been taught and play the game of volleyball with good skills and court awareness.
Volleyball is so erratic as has been stated by Rick. It's even worse when a team has no game plan, no strategy to utilize the best players in the best spots. And like in any sport, having great skills in volleyball is important, perhaps even more so since the use of one's hands are somewhat different than just handling a basketball, for example.
It's also a sport that it's extremely beneficial to watch the eyes of the players you're aiming your camera at. The eyes can tell you when the ball is about to enter your frame. When you see a players eyes light up, it's time to fire. By the time you do fire, the ball will be in the frame and your number of available keepers will go up. This does not work in beach volleyball when people where sunglasses. |

The angle I had wasn't wide enough to get the defenders all the way in the shot. I'll probably try something else next time. |

| ->> I guess it's because of how seldom we usually see men's volleyball in the USA (for most of us only every four years, and then only IF NBC decides to show it), but I can't believe how small that ball looks compared to those guys in Rick Rickman's gallery. |

| ->> In my opinion, volleyball is the most challenging indoor sport to shoot but handball is the one giving more solid and amazing (and its so easy to get the action) shoots. In the USA its a sport without expression, but in Europe its big. |

I shot my first VB game on friday. Toughhh. Dont think I got anything usable with a person hitting a ball. Fun though. |

| ->> I too find volleyball to be the most difficult of sports to cover. Some of the colleges I cover have a balcony around the gym and I'll shoot some from up there with (I still can't believe this sometimes) a 400. I wonder how I did it when I shot film. Not from the balcony, but the sport in general. |

->> Jamey, volleyball is very demanding because you really need to have a good understanding of the game in order to shoot it properly. A good example is when you are shooting the reception: you must be always on the back of the setter cause if you are not, you will probably miss the face of the libero due to his body position... this is one of many little things that you should take in consideration when shooting. Timming is also at the top of the most important things. Volleyball (5 years in a row shooting almost every weekend) was a good way for me to improve in the tecnical chapter.

| ->> I love volleyball for practice. As Nuno says, timing is everything. Anticipation is key and court awareness is vital. Knowing the game helps but hyper-awareness is ultimate. If you can shoot volleyball well you can shoot almost anything well. It's a great regimen for anyone who wants to do sports as a profession and needs to work on shooting action. Try it! It can be a humbling experience. |

->> I also recommend just watching the game without shooting for a game or so. You can miss many things when your eye is fixed to a camera (I know I do).
As Nuno and Rich mentioned knowing the game will help you a ton when shooting.
Once you know and can anticipate where the ball might go during a certain situation can help a ton as well.
The one thing I love about shooting volleyball is the team camaraderie and emotion that volleyball has. I look for those pictures sometimes more then actual action shots.
I also recommend trying to switch between shooting mens and womens volleyball if you can. While men's is more high flying and harder hitting, the women's game is more defensively orientated (i.e digging,passing).
Good luck.
