Anyone using Snow Leopard?

| ->> It's been a couple days since Apple released their newest operating system. I am thinking about picking up a copy myself and upgrading and just wanted to see if anyone out there has upgraded and how they are liking it, what problems they might be having and what new things they were pleasantly surprised to find. Thanks! |

Computing Rule Number Two: Never use version one, or version X.0, of anything.
I've ordered my upgrade and will keep it safe in a drawer until at least the release of version 10.6.1 if not later. I'm going to let other people discover that their hard drive's been corrupted or that there's been a driver mix-up for DVD burners...

The only application I had trouble with is El Gato Eye TV. Upgrade to the latest version before installing Snow Leopard.
I went with the upgrade as opposed to the clean install. All went well and I"m seeing a slight bump in speed with Apple Apps. (mail, aperture, etc) |

10.6 isn't a "version X.0" (wouldn't that be 10.0, 11.0, etc?)
The "manual" consist of 8 graphically heavy panels the size of the CD.

->> Upgraded 4 Macs in my house to Snow Leopard and all is well. Major applications, Aperture, Fetch, PCSC4, Office...etc, are fine. Only one that gave me fits was Capture NX. Version 2.2.0 worked fine after the SL upgrade, but then I proceeded to upgrade Capture NX 2.2.2 and would not open any files after that. I'm getting some noises about similar symptoms with other 2.2.2 and SL users but there are also a few that didn't experience issues with this combo. I downgraded to 2.2.0 and all is fine again.
Overall booting up and logging in seem to be a tad faster. |

->> Delane,
Snow Leopard is a version point-0. It's 10.6.0 as opposed to the last version of Leopard which was 10.5.8. The original version of Leopard was 10.5.0 with a few updates over the ensuing time. Although all have been variants on the original 10.0.0 each subsequent version has been a big change. I know the change from 10.4 to 10.5 was a big change in the base of the OS.
As Jim was saying, many folks don't like to install version 1.0 of anything but wait for an update or two to work out the bugs others find.
Although called CS4 the original version of the latest Photoshop was actually 10.0 (I think it was 10) and since there it has been updated to 10.0.1 |

Does Microsoft Office 2004 work with SL??? I didn't see the need to upgrade to 2008.
What were the problems with NX2 Version 2.2.2??? I find it silly to go back!!
Does Photo Mechanic 4.5.4 work with SL??
Thanks

MS Office works (it runs under Rosetta, so the first time you run it, OS X will install Rosetta...it's not installed by default)
I'm running PM 4.6.1 so I can't vouch for the legacy versions. I had a crash last night, but it's run find for hours with no problems. |

->> Thanks Delane, I have a feeling that I'm going to have to upgrade to Photomechanic 4.6!! I'll call Camera Bits tomorrow and I'll buy the latest version.
Now, I'm going to hold off on SL until Nikon gets a fix out there for Capture 2.2.2, I don't want to have to go back to 2.2.0.
I'm glad that I won;t be forced to Upgrade my Microsoft Office, that is another one that I don't feel like Upgrading, the Office 2004(I think this is the second version for OSX) is the best. I have heard really bad reviews about Officce 2008 for Mac.
Thanks for the Feedback.

I just upgraded last night. Everything seems to be working great. I'm just waiting on Canon to release Snow Leopard compatible printer drivers though (MX680), I've lost the ability to print over wifi and the preference pane for Logitech mice needs to be updated as well. |

I'll do the Photo Mechanic 4.6 Upgrade tomorrow and as soon as Nikon fixes NX2 2.2.2, I'll upgrade to Snow Leopard. Not worth it at this time. I use NX2 on a daily basis for every commercial job I do, I can't afford to loose it.

It's a new operating system (and major re-write) whose number is 10.6.0 and therefore worthy of suspicion IMO. It doesn't seem to have anything that I need right now (few upgrades really do) so I'll wait a while and let other people de-bug it. |

| ->> Snow Leopard has some issues with SpellCatcher (spell checking software). SpellCatcher is updated to run SL, but it doesn't work in 64bit (or with apps that are 64bit) so you have to set your apps to run in 32 bit. I am still wrestling with trying to get the finder to run in 32 bit. Otherwise everything seems to be okay. |

->> I have upgraded to Snow Leopard on both an older MacBook Pro and a 2nd Gen MacBook Air. For me the installation took a little longer than I had anticipated, about an hour. With the $29 upgrade there is not option to do a "clean" install, it is only an upgrade from Leopard. I did pickup over 7 gig of hard drive space because if the smaller footprint, which I am guessing comes from getting rid of the PowerPC code. So far everything works.
Drew, I can comment on anything from CS3 but I can say that CS2 apps work fine after it installs Rosetta. As a matter of fact one of the Leopard updates broke Photoshop CS2 which now works in Snow Leopard.
All CS4 apps seem to be snappier as well as Lightroom 2.
I think it is an excellent upgrade.

->> Snow Leopard in my experience is faster, but there are still a few things that are not working correctly.
A major one where there still seem to be issues is color profiling devices (Colormunki, Eye One, Spyder)
I use both a Colormunki and a Spyder 3 (with Coloreyes Display Pro software) and neither is creating good profiles under 10.6 (they look washed out and unsaturated)... and in trying to just use the old profiles that were created in 10.5 look washed out and unsaturated in 10.6, also.
I am sure that it is just a matter of time until this is addressed by Xrite, who makes most of these devices, but still, no ability to color manage images makes my work very hard to do.
There might be some profiling device/software combos that do work, but right now there seem to be a lot more that don't.
I also have had a few problems with Canon printers operating correctly (or at all) under 10.6, even some of the printers that are listed as having 10.6 drivers on the DVD are not operating correctly... fyi
Growl does not work reliably at this point... again, it is being addressed.
I have also experienced a few glitches with Photomechanic... not that are terribly serious, and the guys at Camera Bits, as always, are great and working to resolve the issues, but still, weird things can happen.
I have also had issues with CS4 crashing on the machine running 10.6
Overall, Snow Leopard looks like it is a great OS and is going to be fun to use, but I would wait until the 10.8.1 update comes out and that all the must have software is running smoothly and supported. |

->> Here's a simple way to test out Snow Leopard on your system the easy way:
I used Carbon Copy Cloner to make a copy of my boot disk. I then booted into that disk (hold option at boot). Install Snow Leopard on this disk. Then kick the tires on it. If your apps run fine, you're all set.
Just took an external hard drive and an hour to copy over files (100GB), and an hour to install snow leopard. Most of it was unattended so I took a nap.
I'm glad I did it too. I use a variety of apps, and enough of them were unhappy with Snow Leopard for me to install it just yet. I'll consider upgrading all my apps when they announce Snow Leopard updates, then install Snow Leopard on a new copy of my boot disk as stated above. It takes a few hours, but saves me a bunch of headaches.
Carbon Copy Cloner is free btw |

->> Mitch, this is what I got from Cradoc:
The good news is all of our current programs will run in Snow Leopard, BUT you must complete the following steps, or you might be locked out of your programs because Snow Leopard changes your unique computer ID.
Please review this ENTIRE EMAIL carefully:
If you have already upgraded to Snow Leopard
The first time you open fotoQuote Pro 6 or the fotoKeyword Harvester you will get an error message saying that the software is configured for only one computer. This is because Snow Leopard has changed your computer’s ID and makes the software think that it is on another computer.
The most important thing is to NOT deactivate the current version of the software. The changes due to Snow Leopard cause problems when this happens. Follow these steps to get the program running with Snow Leopard.
1. Click the more info button in the error dialog box. You will be taken to the “About...” screen which has your old computer ID in the lower left corner.
2. Send us an email (support@cradocfotosoftware.com) with that computer ID and we will delete it from our system and send you instructions on how to activate the new computer ID.
3. Quit the program until you have received our email instructions confirming that your activations have been reset.
If you have not upgraded to Snow Leopard
Maintenance Updates Available Soon
We have been working on the maintenance updates of fotoQuote Pro 6 and the fotoKeyword Harvester. We will compile them in the latest version of our programming language to insure maximum compatibility with Snow Leopard.
These maintenance updates will be available to registered users at no additional cost. These updates have a much simpler activation process. Also, you can deactivate and reactivate the programs yourself at any time, so that you can move our programs to any of your computers without contacting us as you had to do in the past.
The update for fotoQuote Pro 6 also includes some updated pricing and a new assignment coach topic.
If all goes as planned, we hope to have the fotoQuote update done within the next few days (the fotoKeyword Harvester will be close behind). We’ll send you an email with a link and instructions when they are ready.
Once You Get the Maintenance Update Follow These Steps:
1. Once you have received our update for fotoQuote Pro 6 or the fotoKeyword Harvester install the updates on your computer BEFORE INSTALLING Snow Leopard. Be sure to follow the instructions in the update announcement on how to backup your data before installing the update.
2. When you open your program you will be asked to register. Enter your name and serial number and go through the Internet Activation procedure. This will confirm your current activation and will not use an additional activation.
3. Once the maintenance version is installed and activated you can deactivate it whenever you need to by selecting Deactivate from the fotoQuote Pro 6 menu. This removes the computer’s ID from our system. Be sure to deactivate BEFORE installing Snow Leopard.
4. Then when you upgrade to Snow Leopard you will be able to run the program and activate it again and your new computer ID will automatically be entered into the system.
5. We highly recommend first deactivating fotoQuote Pro 6 or the fotoKeyword Harvester any time you make any major changes to internal hardware or your Operating System because often these changes can alter the Computer ID. You can reactivate after the changes.
Snow Leopard and fotoBiz 2.0
FotoBiz 2.0 does not run natively on Intel machines. It uses an OSX component called Rosetta to do this. Rosetta is the part of the OSX operating system that allows Intel Macs to run all programs, including those written for the pre-Intel processors like the Power PC. In all past versions of OSX Rosetta was included automatically. In Snow Leopard installing Rosetta is an optional feature, you have to specifically tell Snow Leopard to install it. I suggest that you do this.
I’ve installed Rosetta with Snow Leopard on my own computer because even though Apple would like to leave their pre-Intel world behind, many programs I use still need Rosetta to function. The current version of fotoBiz is one of them.
If you didn’t install Rosetta with Snow Leopard, the first time you run fotoBiz 2.0 OSX will ask you if you want to install Rosetta. This process takes only a couple of minutes after which you are able to run fotoBiz 2.0 (and any other programs that need Rosetta).
Support Questions
We have tried to address all the known issues with this email. Our hands have been full with having to support some early Snow Leopard users who have been locked out of their programs due to the computer ID change. If you have other questions it may take us longer than normal to get back to you.
All OS upgrades are a drag, but we’re on top of this one. Hopefully it will go smoothly for us all.
Thank you for your patience,
Cradoc |
