Choosing Thomas

->> Hey all:
I invite you to take a second and watch the following piece by a member of our staff:
http://www.dallasnews.com/s/dws/photography/2009/thomas/
Sonya Hebert -- along with editing and multimedia production help from fellow photo staffers Brad Loper, Ahna Hubnik and David Guzman, as well as the support from many folks here at the paper -- spent a ton of time on this powerful story. We're very proud of the work she and the others did on this. It's obviously some very difficult subject matter, and as usual, Sonya poured her heart and soul into the piece, and it shows.
Thanks for looking, and please visit the splash in the future for further segments of the story as they are published (schedule is listed).

->> Damn! That really moved me.
Having a healthy 12 year old granddaughter and a new, healthy grandson born in January, I realize how fortunate I am. |

->> Incredible. I have no words that are eloquent enough to express my feelings about this beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, expression of love, not only by the parents in choosing to have Thomas, but by Sonya Hebert in the way she told the story.

->> G.J,
This was SO powerful. No words can describe what I feel. THIS is what photojournalism is about.
Sonya has done a wonderful job. In a age where what journalists do is challenged, this should remind everyone why what we do IS important. |

->> Wow. Kind of in turmoil watching it. I guess the true mark of excellence in producing something like this is when viewers forget about the images and can only reflect and think, "What would I do?"
I can't say the next part properly, so excuse me if it is a bit off. I have only been able to bring myself to be there at the end, the final breath, for a pet, and that was gutwrenchingly horrible. But, even in that, I was able to see the true beauty in being with someone, or something, as they pass from this life to the next.
To document that is truly amazing. And to do it, to choose willingly to be a "witness" as life passes. I don't know, I can't write the right words. I hope everyone else can do what my wife does sometimes and just finish the thought for me. It is there, just not something that translates into something I can write... |

| ->> Thank you very much for sharing that. There is a definite beauty in life and death and the true value of both can really only be understood by experiencing the other. Thanks to Sonya for pouring her self into this and giving Thomas' story the voice it deserves. |

->> My studio shot Deidrea and T.K.'s wedding. I have never met anyone with more beautiful souls; they were super fun and pleasure to be around. We kept contact with them after the wedding; hearing her first reactions on this was heart wrenching, the entire process was so tough for them along with making the decisions they had to make...all they wanted was a child together.
After watching this series of events unfold before me, the presentation could not have done a better job representing the true emotion of all of the events.
So thanks Sonya and the rest of the DMN staff for putting together an amazing piece on a wonderful family. |

->> And here I thought after reading the thread title that this was going to be about Witte's new marketing strategy ;)
Seriously though, I just got to sit down and watch this piece, and it is absolutely incredible. Sonya's compassion really shines in this project, she did an amazing job. I can't imagine how I would compose myself covering a story like this, really shows a great deal of poise and understanding on her part.
For all the nonsense threads about being embarrassed to be here, wanting to shoot the Super Bowl with your Canon Rebel, and wondering why you can't pay your bills by getting $.50 per photo for your wire submissions, the occasional thread like this helps reinforce the need for this message board. A powerful example of photojournalism indeed, thanks Gerry.
