->> Taking a break from our usual threads about credentials policy, Nikon vs Canon take a billion and working for free; tonight's the first night of high school football here in Mo.
Forget about my new Chiefs credentials, what I'm really excited about my new job is covering some state championship contending HS teams.
The chants of the cheerleaders; the rumble of the marching band's drum line, $1 hot dogs and a bunch of kids who'll never be considered as a D2 walk-on much less for a scholarship giving their all on the field.
THIS is what I love about shooting sports. How bout ya'll? |

->> screw the lights. i'd love shooting high school football a lot more if they were all day games. we have two, maybe three, high school stadiums of the 20 or so in our coverage area that you can shoot without having to use flash. even then if it gets into a red zone situation you have to turn the flash on to shoot from the back of the end zones. i do enjoy the high school environment, but after 15 years the poor lighting has gotten really old.
as far as D1 college goes, i'm chomping at the bit for next saturday to get here.

I'm gonna miss doing college ball this year though, no schools in our coverage area. |

| ->> I love high school football. Nothing better! I don't care about bad lights. Make it work. The games are full of stuff to shoot. I shot DeShaun Foster went played at Tustin in CA. He had 5 TD's 400 yards, over 200 in kick returns and still lost to Carson Palmer. Great game. |

->> I love shooting high school football more than anything. The only thing about it is I cover three high schools and the fifth largest school in the state of Arkansas has the worst lights of the three I cover! But I don't mind breaking out the flash when i need to.
Oh, Marc. Have a safe trip to LR for the Hogs' opener. I haven't heard about a credential yet. |

Trying to get back into a rhythm of things before Georgia kicks off at home in 2 weeks. Still some rust to knock off. |

->> My stadium got a new pressbox over the summer, complete with elevator. I thanked them and my knees thanked them, too. Plus getting a D3 this year finally allowed me to go back to nat light football photography. Bye bye flash, hello all those pictures I missed 'cuz the quantum couldn't recycle fast enough.

->> Speaking of which watch out for those Friday night lights from crashing down on you.
http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/20534068/detail.html
I've always enjoyed photographing sports on all levels, but especially the national tradition of a Friday night football game. There is a certain feeling in the air this time of year with students going back to school, a change in seasons and fall sports going into full swing, an anticipation of the big game with festivities during homecoming week leading up to Friday night. Friday night lights brings back fond memories of when I was a teenager.
On occasion you have an opportunity to cover a special athlete who rises above the rest. That athlete for me was Austin Box who played ball for Enid High School, Enid, Okla. who is now a junior linebacker for the Oklahoma Sooners. A small town of a little less than 50,000 has produced nine NFL athletes, Lydell Carr one of the more popular names.
Its a lot of fun watching an athlete grow and lead their team to a state championship later to play on a division I team. Hopefully Austin will become Enid's 10th NFL player. |

->> I've shot two Friday nights already and there were downpours near halftime at both games. Last night's game was stopped because of lightning.
I'm with Marc Henning though, I would prefer to shoot during the daytime. I worked at a paper several years ago in New Hampshire and they played all the games on Saturday afternoons. No fussing over crappy lights and no worries on the use of strobes.I loved it. |

You must not be talking about Shotwell Stadium. I met Tommy there Thursday evening during the weather delayed Northwest/ACU game. The pressbox leaked like crazy. It's still not a bad stadium. |

->> Arkansas starts its regular season Aug. 31-Sept. 4. We have a bunch of special games at some of the colleges around the state. I shot 3 benefit scrimmages last week with all three of my teams playing...the first two were available light and for the third, I had to break out the flash.
But after next week, I'll be gone for two weeks to China to complete my adoption process. I'm sure I'll be rusty and jetlagged when I get back! |

->> Andrew,
Interesting you post that link about the poles, a local high school here had a pole fall over (luckily during the winter) into the bleachers. The failure occurred at the same place the article describes (where the pole is welded to the base), it just peeled right off. The poles were around 20 years old, and have since been replaced. |
