Nikon lenses on Sony DSLR ?

->> Does anyone know if there is an adapter to allow the use of Nikon glass on a Sony DSLR ?

I know that Nikon glass isn't mountable on Canon DSLR's (though the reverse is true) but haven't been able to find any info either way about Sony.

As much as I love my D3 and D700, I would at times enjoy having a higher resolution body, and the $8000 D3x isn't an option.

Canon 5D mkII is clearly a great camera but I can't use my existing glass and I'm not about to start buying some Canon lens for one body and Nikon glass for another body.

The new 24meg Sony A850 though at $2000 would be ideal if I could still mount Nikon glass with an adapter, even if you lose AF, since I'd be buying it to use with the PC-E lenses which are MF anyways.

There are a couple of limitations, but you can mount a Nikon lens to a Canon body. Many 5DmkII users went this route to get aperture control before the manual control firmware release came out.

->> Before going to Nikon, I used to use a M42 Pentax for Macro shots on a 10D with adapter.

The issue is the flange-to-sensor distance. What made EOS (and now 4/3 and m4/3) so compatible with other lenses is the short flange-to-sensor distance (42 mm). If I'm not mistaken, the Minolta A (Sony alpha) mount's distance is 44.5mm. So you may get infinity focusing unlike long flange focal distance makers like Nikon, but I make no guarantees - a few mm make a lot of difference. BTW, using the distance scale for focusing is not accurate.

There are a lot of Chinese makers/distributors of lens adapters, as well as Novoflex, Rayqual and Cameraquest. May want to check around and see. Also, I'm not totally sure, but you may want to check and see if you're able to meter or even shoot with a non-electronic lens. EOS cameras will shoot in A or M and meter. Not sure about Sonys.

->> Jeff, another consideration for Nikon glass to Canon cameras is the 16:9 adapter
