Canon 5d and Football

->> I am a student photographer working on a budget. My current kit includes a canon 40d and a canon 5d. I have a 70-200mm 2.8 non IS lens and a 17-40mm f.4. For this season I was originally planning on using the 40d as my primary football camera because of its 6fps and cropping factor. But after using the 5d for a few JMU practices I am finding the 5d to not only produce much higher quality images but also much sharper images. I was wondering if anyone had any experience using the 5d as a primary fast action sports camera and what they thought of it. While it suffers from less frames per second in this case it seem quality would be much better then quantity. If you could please let me know what your experiences have been with this and what you might suggest as the best set up with the gear I currently have

Thanks
Robert

->> I used to own 2 Canon 1D mark IIn's and then 1 canon 1D mark III, but now I primary kit is 2 5D mark II's and 1 5D.

I dont shoot a lot of sports anymore but I do cover MLB and NFL. Yeah the focusing isnt the greatest and the FPS isnt 10 frames a second, but ive never been a heavy shooter in the first place. Its a good enough set up to get the job done for me.

->> Id use the 40D during the day for its better frame rate and effective reach due to the crop factor and the 5D for night games as its going to have a cleaner high ISO.

I haven't checked prices recently but would imagine you could score a pretty good deal on a 1D mkII or 1D mkII N which would be a much better sports camera overall and partially fund it by selling one or the other camera, ideally the 40D.

Both the 40D and 5D share a similar AF system and both of them are rather lacking frankly. The 5D produces excellent images but its AF system is its weakest point, more so than the frame rate.

If your going to be serious about sports photography Id really suggest trying to get a 1D mkII. It will make life much easier for you overall due to far better AF and FPS.

Its not stellar in low light, 5D is better, and the 5D takes better images overall, but as a combo they really work well to give you options for both IQ and speed/af and for a pretty modest price these days.

->> FWIW, my 5D focused better and provided cleaner images than my Mark II in dim high school gym lighting shooting volleyball. I didn't have the frame rate, but preferred one sharp, clean image to 4 soft, noisy ones. And, my 5D is my second camera at night high school football, now that I've replaced the Mark II with a Mark III.

The focus on my 5D has always been rather snappy. Maybe I just got a good 5D and a dud Mark II.

I'd shoot with whichever camera gave me the best images.

->> I used to shoot a 5D and I must say it tracked extremely well. Not a huge FPS, but it tracked well and as you know the 5D files look awesome.

->> While having a camera with 10-12 FPS is helpful, good photographers don't need a high FPS capability to get good images. I would bet that most pros could cover a football game on 1-shot settings and come away with dozens of good images, at least they should be able to.

The shutter lag time should really be the only worrisome factor. I don't think it would be an issue with either of those cameras.

A lot of great images were produced using manual-focus cameras without motordrive and seemingly unlimited capacity to capture images.

Just work on timing your photos and anticipating the play. Photographing practices and as many sports as possible, even little kids, will help.

Shooting thousands of images at a football game will mostly result in a lot of time sorting through images you won't use. Let the videographers record every second. :)

->> I've shot maybe 50-100 test frames with my 5dII at soccer games. The autofocus is slow compared to 1dIIn, but when the focus hits spot on the image quality is stunning in low light situations.
