What's the best first step in trying to aquire credentials?

->> I work full-time for a newspaper on California's central coast and we have a cool local story we're doing for our magazine where a a former high school coach is now coaching for the San Diego Chargers.
We're running the cover story the Thursday before the Chargers play the Raiders in Oakland and I think it'd be really cool for our readers to see some coverage from myself.
I left a message with the PR/press contact at the Raider's offices looking for a pass, explaining what I was looking for and being very professional as I did.
Are there any other routes I can/should try?
I appreciate all the help I can get with this, as I'm a smaller fish wanting to swim in the larger pond.

| ->> Having your assigning or managing editor put in the request typically will result in you having more luck. |

->> Hey Nic,
I would second Jeff's suggestion. Have them email as well as fax the request on company letter head. I would also drop a note to Bill Johnston explaining what it is you want to accomplish, how you plan to do it and why you need be there as opposed to getting the shot off the wire service.
Bill is a good guy but, the Chargers are very tight with handing out game day credentials. Have you considered going to a practice as well as or instead of the game?
Good Luck! |

->> You have a few things against you:
- Your publication does not regularly cover the NFL
- This is for a feature story
- There's not a lot of photos you can get of an assistant coach during a game that you can't get at practice at their training complex
- And lastly: You're dealing with the Raiders
Generally, working on a FEATURE story is a tough sell to media relations departments when requesting credentials. Also the request usually has to come from a sports editor on the publication.
Since it is a Chargers assistant coach, you might try there as well and see if they might help?
I'm not sure how the Raiders do their credentialing, but the Chargers is done on-line (both season and single game requests).
I would have your sports editor call the Raider soonest since you already tried contacting them. |

->> I'm with Bert, since this is a San Diego coach you should go through their press office. They can issue credentials as the visiting team or contact the Raiders for you to get a credential.
The San Diego press office is much more likely to listen to you wanting to highlight one of their coaches and play in the local angle than the Raiders. The Chargers want to promote themselves and the Raiders want to promote themselves -- not the other team. |

->> You also need to determine which kind of assistant coach he is: Is he on the bench during a game or in the booth?
If he's on the bench you can get some images, if he's in the booth they aren't going to let you up there. |
