HELP - Extracting data from formatted external drive

->> Last night I did the unthinkable thing. I accidentally formatted an external drive which held about 100gb of important images I shot over the past 2 months. This happened while I was in the process of backing up the drive to another one. I tried running PhotoRescuePro v4.2 against it but none of the images were salvaged. It is a 500gb drive so it took a long while to run. When this was formatted, the QUICK FORMAT option was used. When I use Device Manager (PC), it shows up, but says the drive needs to be formatted.
What are my options? Is there other software out there that would perhaps do a better job? Is my only option now to send it out to a data retrieval service? Or are the images lost forever?
Any wisdom on this would be greatly appreciated...! |

->> Hey Wally,
http://www.dposoft.net/
I had a similar problem. HDD regenerator worked like a charm. I think the software cost $40.

->> Thanks for the help offered, the HDD did not work (drive does not show up in list of drives); and it seems like the software for formatted memory cards are meant for that, not for a large 500gb external drive.
Gene thanks for the private email, I have a PC and it doesn't seem like the same software (Data Rescue II) is available for PC as well.
Any other advice? |

->> Wally, check the drive manufacturer for diagnostics. Many makers allow those to be downloaded from their websites. You might get lucky and find one that could be useful. You basically need to get to the index and get it rebuilt. Generally a quick format just wipes out the primary index. It often leaves the secondary in tact.
Aside from that, you probably looking at a professional recovery firm. |

->> I have used Prosoft's Data Rescue II for Mac and it has worked brilliantly. They also have a PC solution called Data Rescue PC3. Though I have not used it, it would be my first try based on the success of their Mac solution.

->> Data Rescue by ProSoft saved me from an accidental purging of important information on a drive. The software was totally worth every penny spent so I would look here first. Thankfully I haven't had to use it since.

| ->> Thanks for all the help offered, I have the drive in with a reputable company for recovery. Hopefully all that needs to be done is indexes restored. Thanks again for the offline emails as well. |

->> OK, new question. Does anyone know of reliable software that will rebuild indexes from the formatted disk? Extracting images from the disk did not work, using a number of pieces of software. Next, which should really have been my first step, is to find a way to rebuild indexes.
Any experts out there? |
