Buyer beware: Apple Cinema Display uses mini connector

->> Please use caution if you choose to purchase any new Apple cinema displays.
I just unpacked a brand new 24-inch cinema display and it has a mini adapter for the video signal. There's no way to connect it to my Dual G5 tower, which is still a very good computer.
The new cinema displays will not connect to older DVI/Analog graphics cards without an adapter. Apple says the adapter isn't even sold yet. They're saying that the adapter box will cost $200. It already costs a $100 premium for the Apple-branded monitor and then to have this issue arrise... OMG!
Hope this saves you significant hassles. |

| ->> I agree. As much as I love Apple they are really starting to do some annoying things. I think the interface with the new ipod touch is one of the worse things I've ever seen. whatever happened to the good ole drag and drop. to load photos on it now is an ordeal and the whole "backing up your ipod" before shutting it down from the connection with the computer can take over 20 minutes. Maybe Jobs should have stayed retired. They're making things more complicated instead of simpler. |

->> The connector used is the Mini DisplayPort announced by Apple last October and used on every new Mac since then:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini_DisplayPort
The System Requirements for the new Cinema Display reads:
"Compatible with Mac computers with a Mini DisplayPort, including MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, Mac mini, and iMac"
Darren, an adapter like this one is what you would need to connect the new display to an older computer:
http://estore.circuitassembly.com/products/DVI-to-Mini-Displayport-Adapter....
For those with newer computers that have a MDP connection there are a variety of options to connect older displays to the newer computers:
http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/07/mini-displayport-no-longer-a-hass...
Cables from both MonoPrice and Circuit Assembly have gotten good reviews online.
Personally I'm running an HP LP2475w with my Mac Pro. The $300 premium for the Apple display that has a glossy screen just isn't worth it in my opinion. Most third party monitors have a variety of connection options allowing you to use newer and older computers without being locked down to a single input. |

->> My PC at home uses the Dell Ultrasharp 24".
My Mac at work uses a EIZO CG241W. I didn't feel I need to spend $2,000 on another EIZO right now. I do all the color correction on the EIZO.
The monitor we purchase was supposed to go on an older G5 for my student to use.
I'm planning to order another Dell Ultrasharp 24" since the crApple brand one is proprietary. |

->> Well, this thread got me looking into monitors this morning and after researching quite a bit, I went out and bought the Apple Cinema HD Display 30-inch Wide Screen....for my PC. That's right for my PC, very sweet display. I love it. It hooked right into my DVI connection with no adapters required.
Thanks to all who contributed to this thread. I love it. |
