->> Dave, I assume you talking about how some web hosting providers will allow you to "add-on" additional websites to a single account?
e.g. www.example1.com and www.example2.org are linked to a single account for management but are totally different websites.

Or are you talking about sub-domains? e.g. sub1.example.com and sub2.example.com

If we're talking about the former, I don't see anyway it could affect Google rankings. Google has no idea which hosting accounts different domains are linked to at a provider. While they will most likely be served by the same IP address that shouldn't matter. Unless you're paying for a dedicated server there are probably dozens of websites severed from the same physical machine as your website.

Getting your own domain is incredibly cheap and easy. Do it.

->> Yes, I am referring to 'add on' domains that are offered free (I think I get 7) as part of my web hosting package. My website MentawaiSurfPhotos.com has an add-on domain called SaltyCamera.com and I am wondering if it affects it's ranking by being 'just an add-on' and not the main account.

From your replies it looks like it doesn't matter. If so, that is good because I don't want to pay to host Salty Camera by itself if it doesn't make a difference.

->> dave,

doesn't make a difference, unless...

you are clearly trying to scam by replicating the same content under 7 different domains, or you are setting up a link farm where all the domains point to one an another in an effort to build backlinks.

it they are different websites with different content, you'll be fine.

->> Hey Allen, I've got a related question I'm hoping you (and anyone else) can weigh in on:

Let's say a photographer has multiple domain names such as www.examplephoto.com, www.examplephotography.com and www.examplephoto.net that they want to all point to the exact same content. The purpose being to prevent another photographer from using a similar domain name (as opposed to someone who wants different websites for their editorial vs. wedding business).

From an SEO standpoint:

Is it better to configure the web server to simply point each domain at the same root folder (serving identical content but under different URLs).

or

Is it better to have all the "secondary" domains redirect to the "main" address. (ie: examplephoto.net redirects a visitor's browser to examplephoto.com and then serves the content from that address.)

Let me know if I didn't explain this well enough and thanks for any insight that can be offered.

->> Dave,

There are many different ways to redirect a page. However, a 301 redirect is considered by many to be the most SEO-friendly solution to your question.

Google may actually penalize you for having repeat content on multiple domains, as it's seen as a way to try to beat the system.

With a 301 redirect, when you redirect examplephoto.com to examplephotography.com, you also give any SEO clout that examplephoto.com has to examplephotography.com
