Thanks for sharing this. Steve and I briefly overlapped at a paper we both worked in Vermont while I was coming in and head was headed out. |

| ->> Yep..I donated. It is so sad to hear about this situation with Steve and Marian. EVERYONE...Realize the situation Steve is in could be any of us. Not a situation anyone would want to be in, but we would all make the best of the situation and do our best, therefore if in such a situation, any help from anyone (this being SS members)adds up, meaning a mere $20.00 times 1,000 means $20,000. You can see how a small amount multiplied by many people can suddenly be a lot of money. So, consider making a donation that amounts to your morning Starbucks and lunch etc. It all adds up. |

->> There was another thread here in the message board that called our PJ business a "small world." Yes, indeed it is. Help a brother out and show that you too can lend a hand to a PJ in need in this small world of ours.
I, like many of you, have gone on hundreds if not thousands of assignments with only myself to count on for support. It's nice to know we can count on our fellow PJs once in awhile.
I donated. |

| ->> bump- It is odd, how at least for this morning, this thread ended up right below the thread about self-insurance for photographers, at the time our country decides how to change the health care system. Not gonna take sides- difficult one for me cuz I grew up in a house with a dad for a doctor and mom for a nurse, but these 2 threads sure illuminate the nature of the debate. And yes, I did donate. |

->> You really don't want to have a rare or difficult medical situation if you have this insurance company. Trust me on that. I had a 4" long spinal cord tumor (very, very rare) removed 19 years ago which, unfortunately for me has a moderate risk of regrowth without regard to length of time since removal. Thanks to that, I've had my own battles with Cigna who wouldn't approve an MRI or a referral to a neurosurgeon. I finally had to go back to my original insurance carrier (carried two different policies for about two years) so I could go back to my original surgeon to get the care I needed. Thankfully, no tumor regrowth, just a couple ruptured discs at the previous surgery site, which was really good news.
Since reading Steve's story brought back so many of my own battles with Cigna, I gladly donated. I only wish I was in a position to donate more than I did.

| ->> Very hard story to read without getting a lump in my throat. I lost my job in February so have no medical insurance at all but I still made a small donation. I've been keeping my eye on the other thread regarding medical insurance for photographers to see what kind of responses are gathered. I'm petrified not having insurance, but then again, it's just me and not a whole family I have to care for. |

->> I just donated. It's sad how life can turn so quickly.
One of my wife's best friends had a brain hemorrhage a few years ago. She was single and self-employed. It was a financial nightmare. Her family has been very supportive and her mother moved up from south Florida to help with her care.
She now lives in her own apartment and get around in a motorized wheelchair. She continued to improve and has come to grips with her new life and has a great attitude.
I wish Steve and his family the best and hope they continue to get support from others who can help make a difference.
We have to take care of each other, not just as photojournalists, but as human beings. |

->> Something to keep in mind and something I will do.
Make a calendar reminder for each payday or once a month and consider donating again. Unfortunately, I feel his ordeal will be ongoing for quite a while and continued support is important. If you have the means I encourage you to consider this

All anyone asks is that you consider helping, maybe even agin if you can. I'm just struck by how easily it could happen to any number of us here.

| ->> From Chris: >Today, a short video was released by Brave New Films that features Steve and Marian's story. We appeal to you, once again, to help us. Please, go to the blog, http://savestevesfamily.blogspot.com watch the video and pass it along to anyone you think might be willing to help. We are already so thankful for the hundreds of people who have gotten us this far. We just haven't gone far enough yet. |

->> In Canada we have a bit of different health care model in place - not perfect but not at the whim of some over paid corporate hack.
Without starting some kind of major controversy, it seems like your president is trying to fix this problem but the insurance lobby is fighting it - and the average joe is getting screwed if they have medical problems.
I donated to the cause, & if every SS member kicked in the the amount of a grande, low fat, latte .......it would go along way to help Steve and his family.

->> Done!
This example of the community coming together is how things should work. Do there need to be some healthcare reforms? YES. Should the government take over or be in the business of healthcare? NO. Off of soapbox. |
