HD Camcorder recomendations??
Jim Pierce, Photographer

->> I have been getting more and more requests from clients to supply video. This is actually how I started 7 years ago but the customers at the time wanted photos that they could not get, so I went in the "still" photo direction... it has worked out very well!

Things might be changing and I am looking at a HD camcorder and am looking at the Canon HFS10, S100.

Any comments on these or other recomendations appreciated as I have only just started my research.

Jim

->> Both are good cameras. Get the mini Canon shotgun mic for better audio. You can also plug in a wireless receiver into the mini mic jack. Check out this post I wrote about training with the HF 10.

->> The problem with both is their format AVCHD. I haven't used it but it's supposed to take a lot of processing power when editing. It's also very compressed.

You might like to look at a Canon HV30, an HDV camera that records to tape, or the new JVC GY-HM100 for around $3500 that records to SD card.

->> Tom,

I was looking at staying below $2k but if there are features that I would use and help me then more would work but I don't want to go over $2500.

Jim I will need to look into this. I have an older canon optima, NOT HD, that records to tape that works fine just not HD and from what I have seen the HD is much much better.

->> With AVCHD in FCP it renders once when you import and then you make any number of changes / edits and then render again during output.

The slow times are at the beginning and at the end, instead of every time you execute a change. When going back to other formats it became a serious disruption of the work flow to stop and render every change. I had no issues with AVCHD for web based video.

Vid cams are updated worse than still dit cams, there is a new version nearly every year. If you are looking for a bargain get a closeout on the previous year's model.

Canon has a couple that record to flash memory, both fixed internal and removable card. The plus of course for the removable card is that the camera isn't tied-up during ingest. But if you go with the flash memory and want to archive be sure to invest in some serious outboard hard drives, maybe a good raid. Likewise, as dated as the HD tape format is becoming, it is simple to file the entire tape in a filing cabinet (never reuse a video tape for serious work) and start fresh each time with a new tape.

Ditto the outboard mic, particularly a good shotgun and be absolutely certain there is an audio monitor jack that will let you plug-in some headphones.
