->> I am sports photographer for Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. Basketball Arena and Football stadium are slated for major expansions, but are still a year away. I have been asked to give input on upgrading existing light setup in the Basketball arena. Next week I will see specs on lighting that is already there (I have been shooting in this arena for 15 years...my cries of affliction have finally been heard.
I will try to put narrow beam fixtures up on the sides of the court to get more actual light there, but also add new fixtures to bring light in from behind baseline, where there currently is none. When the overall renovations are done, Musco lighting will probably install from scratch, but LU is willing to spend $'s now to make this season's stills and broadcasts be better.
If any of you have familiarity with the types of lights in terms of color temperature, phasing variations, etc., I would appreciate such coments.
Current lighting yields about 1/640 @ f/2.8 at 6400 ISO. There are 22 1k (480 volt) light fixtures on a rail that runs just the length of the court. The rail is over the 14th row of seating. The current fixtures are mostly of a flood nature, and scatter lighting around into areas where it is not needed |

| ->> While they're still not "on budget" why not suggest some strobe units with radio remotes? Six Speedotron 2400's with heads would be nice... |

| ->> I second Jim's suggestion. They ought to consider running sync wires in conduit, including drops for the circuits down to the arena floor. They ought to also providing power at locations where strobes are most likely to be placed. |

->> Jim,
Do you really think he needs six heads? I'd say four is enough. The arena may not even be big enough to justify six. We used just four at TSN.
Looking at the website for the Vines Ctr... For ambient light, it looks like they should double the number of lamps on the sides and drop additional down lights om the middle. I can't tell what they have directly over the floor. I assume there's no catwalk in this facility since it look a lot like Utah's dome. |

->> Les after 15 yrs there they know you well and trust your word. Hopefully when this came up "I have been asked to give input on upgrading existing light setup in the Basketball arena" afterward you were able to sit with them as a paying consultant. Even then is still early.
They want your knowledge and professionalism and that cost money. Lots of folks are making $$ as consultants and you can do that too. And since they respect you and know you well, more reason to pay you for that experience, research, travel, food, lodging, time.
Once that is settle then do plenty of research and make a bunch of calls and travel to other universities in the states known for having great lighting. Check out how those strobes are set up & talk to some of the local photographers and check out their work. With those notes you can go back to Liberty and give them your thoughts and still make money in the process.
Again, you can make money as a consultant. I've done private consultation to other photographers or even photo agencies and art galleries re their books,careers,how to sell fine arts, marketing... For me that starts at $200 per hour or $150 if I am doing a seminar at the same time.
Good luck and hope you get compensate.
More 2 come

| ->> Check out how the Pac-10 football stadiums were improved after FOX? sports got the job to do all the games. they lit up the stadiums so it's about 1600 ASA 1/500 @ 2.8 at night games. IF I remember right. I've been away for a while. Univ of Oregon's stadium is awesome at night. |

->> All
I am employed by the university, so I am well compensated.
I installed strobes in this arena 15 years ao ut removed them 5 years ago; the synch wire harness is still there, and I just might install strobes again. Continuous lighting improvement is a given, however, not only for stills, but for TV, which broadcasts all MBB, WBB, and VB games in this venue.
Teams from Clemson, Old Dominion, and James Madison will visit here, and our AD wants upgrade in time to impress them.
If I buy new strobes I would like to install 2 sets of 4 strobes, allowing me to light near court action separately from far court stands, etc.
I am just starting to play with PW TT5 to see what I can do with hypersynch. |
