Scrutinize your non SS contest considerations and entries

->> I was printing some new fall sports promo posters at my local Costco lab for display (they can do 20x30 on-site now) and the color and profiles really pop.
So when I picked it up one of the lab techs handed me a flyer and told me that I should enter it in their international contest.
For some, this advice is old news, but read the fine print B4 considering.
This contest grabs full rights and 100% ownership of the submitted image, regardless if you win or place. I am not slamming Costco, my lab has great techs and the Noritsu printers are top shelf for what I use them for, but the contest is hard to look at as a pro.
Just a reminder to read the fine print for those looking at contest entries, there seems to be a lot of them popping up of late.

->> I agree that we should all read the fine print on any contest we enter, but I also believe that the fine print on this contest is very poorly written. If I had to guess, what they are saying is that ownership of the physical print or digital image submitted is 100% owned by Costco. It says nothing about rights of 3rd party assignment, use, perpetuity, copyright transfer, etc. Whoever wrote this obviously knows nothing about these issues.
The Costco contest is not something I would aspire to in the best of circumstances, but if I were to enter, I don't think I would be very afraid of a total copyright ownership grab and rampant, repeated use w/o compensation. Call me nuts, but I just don't see the horrible risk here. |

| ->> Same wording for most of these type of contests sposored by big corporations. If it bothers you, don't enter. |

| ->> Phil: It recites in Para. 10 of the rules that you will assign ownership and all "intellectual property rights" to Costco. Poorly written but hardly ambiguous. It judiciously uses intellectual property rights in lieu of copyright. Its is a simple grab of rights on even a non-winning entry. Best advice is to stay away. |
