Canon 24-70mm 2.8 On Ebay...question.
Eric Jones, Photographer

->> I'm looking to purchase a used 24-70mm lens and there are several on Ebay. After several emails to the sellers some of the lens are anywhere from 3-4 years old. I noticed on most of the auctions they have stated, "This new lens does what many pros thought Couldn't be done - replace the previous L-series 28-70 f/2.8 lens with something even better." When was that lens replaced with the new lens? If I bid on a lens that was purchased new back in 2004, is that considered the old style lens or the new lens? What do I need to look for so I know that I'm purchasing a good used lens?

Thanks
Eric

->> I can only imagine they are talking about replacing the Canon 28-70mm F2.8L The 24-70mm was first sold in November of 2002, according to Canon's website. There have been some subtle alterations over the years, but overall the lens has been the same since its introduction in 2002. You can ask for the serial number of the lens to verify its manufactured date.

Good luck.

->> As Josh said, the 24-70 replaced the 28-70. Here is the release from when it was first announced:

->> Eric,

If you can wait a few weeks it might be worth your while. There might be some lens announcements that could force people to start offloading their 24-70mm, you might be able to grab one for a really good price.
