Need a laser jet that can do contact sheets

->> I am looking for a laser printer that can produce decent black and white contact sheets for some of my college clients. My current printer, a low end HP 2015, does an absolutely crappy job. They need 8.5x11 contact sheets to store with the disks. I know, its very 20th century, but I cannot change their minds.
I print the contacts from Photo Mechanic, out of my iMac. I probably dont have enough memory in the printer, but who knows.....
If you have a suggestion, please let me know. I'd like to stay away from color or printing them on my inkjet--that takes too damn long and I would like to get out to see the sun before it goes down every night. |

| ->> Richard the lasers suck at this. I used to output contact sheets using PhotoShop and have them lab printed as 8x10's. Price wise it was like all of 2 bucks and the quality was perfect every time. I haven't done it in a while so I don't know if CS still has the contact sheet export function. |

| ->> Eric has a great point. Bought a laser printer and I can't believe how much money I'm putting in for toner. In the next few months I'll have to replace the imaging drum for a four colors at $50's a piece while all the toner is another $60's a piece. |

->> Rich,
I have a Canon all in one Imagemate, not sure the exact model but it is 2 years old and cost me less than 200 bucks.
I use the PS contact sheet automation command for this sort of thing.
The cartrdige that comes with the printer is a "starter" one that is 2/3 or so of a new one. A full replacement cost about 60.00 or so and do about 2000 prints of text so maybe less for contact sheets.
I am trying to figure out why they want this but it is probably to ID players so they can easily sort them to be able to quickly access each player when needed. You don't need high quality for this but they need to be large enough for them to be able to determine who they are looking at. B&W laser will probably work but the size of each to see who is who might add many sheets
I do this all the time when I am sorting out players for senior collages, and before I got PM I used windows explorer and set it to view thumbnails. This is sort of what a contact page will look like, just on the screen.
Maybe this will work for them?
Hope this helps.

->> Kirby I don't know which laser you have. I have an Oki 3200n and have reset the counters twice. I am on the original drums from when I bought the printer and the (text) quality is still great (sux for photos). Ditto for the toner, the counters claim an empty cartridge and somehow I manage to get another 500 pages before I need to refill.
Photos are a whole other matter. For things like index prints you just can't beat a costco or walmart for a cheap index or contact sheet. Avoid the 8x10 and get 2 5x7's and you'll save even more. |

->> Thanks for the responses guys.
I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but the problem with the costco option is expense. I am limited on what I can charge for them, and at $1.49 per 8x10 I would not clear anything on an average game set.
Funny thing, my last PC printer, an HP Laserjet1000 cost me $99, and about $50 for toner that I could get at Costco. It made beautiful contacts straight from Photo Mechanic. Too bad it didnt work with my iMac. It was too old to get an upgraded driver.
I am contemplating dropping $100 on the latest cheapo HP and seeing how it does. If it sucks, the kids need a printer for their PC upstairs.
If anyone else has any ideas, I would appreciate their thoughts. |
