Question about Canon printer ink usage
Alex Witkowicz, Photographer
Denver | Co | USA | Posted: 12:07 PM on 08.10.09
->> I've been using the Canon Pixma Pro9000 for about 6 months now. I've replaced 6 of the 8 ink cartridges a number of times (Bk, C, M, Y, PC, and PM), but the printer has yet to use a single drop from the original Red or Green ink cartridges.

What gives? I've made a lot of prints that are heavy red or heavy green, so why is the printer mixing other inks to produce red and green when it already has plenty of red and green?

Thanks for the help.

->> The Red and Green carts are basically there to help expand the color gamut over what your earlier 6 cartridge printers could produce, but not responsible for the principle ink usage in a given print.

On my i9900 I would go through PM faster than any color, probably 50% faster, even though I hardly printed anything with those colors. Its just how the printer mixes colors and droplets to produce the final image.

Strangely enough now, on my IPF5000 I go through Gray and Yellow the fastest and I know I'm not printing much with Gray or Yellow. Weird stuff indeed.

->> Jeff,
Same deal here on ipf5000 - I replace yellow, gry and photo cyan more often than the others. I believe your gamut comment is correct
