Help recovering photos
Tom Suarez, Photographer

->> While I shooting I noticed it took a long time for the camera to write to the card then an error message came up so I switched cards and everything was fine.
When I open the card using Photomechanic the photos show up along with a few files that say unsupported format and when I try to do anything with them Photomechanic freezes up and says not responding. Other cards work fine.
I tried running Photo Rescue and it can not recover the files either.
I was shooting with a 40D using Kingston 4 gb 133x cards and had this problem once before but was able to open in Photomechanic only loosing the last photo.
Any suggestions. Thanks

->> I second Image Rescue success. IR finds images from events that were shot a year ago even though the card has since been reformated. A friend lost some images using a Kingston 4GB card and once he downloaded IR, those images were recovered. Your the second person in a month's time that I know who has had a Kingston card fail on them. I used Kingston when 256mb was the largest CF card one could buy and that was w/ my point & shoot. I have yet to use them with my DSLR and I may not be persuaded to switch at this point. I realize any CF can fail but I think I'll stay with what I have.

->> I like PhotoRescue myself.

ImageRescue and PhotoRescue both have trial versions that you can download and see if they can locate your files. If the files are listed as being recoverable you can then pay for the program and actually retrieve them.

But for the $30 or so for the programs (at least that is what PhotoRescue is) go ahead and make the investment in the full version. If it doesn't work now you'll need it sometime in the future -- guaranteed.

->> Sorry, just read more closely. If PhotoRescue can't get the files then they are probably corrupted on the disk. It's not simply a directory issue like when you reformat that is causing the problem.

->> Are you able to view the photos on the camera's display directly from the card? If not, I agree with George that the file itself is probably bad and nothing is going to be able to rescue it.

->> Not trying to hijack this thread, but I have a similar question. I shot a show the other night, and when I ingested the shoot, about a dozen out of the first twenty photos were corrupt. Is it likely that they could be "fixed", or am I pretty much screwed on those?

->> Ok, Thanks for all the help. After using Image Rescue it did recover most of the files that could be recovered, but it only recovered the jpgs. Usually the raw files are about 15 mb and the jpeg is about 2-3 mb. The files that were recovered are jpg and about 15 mb each. At least I got the images anyway. Thanks for the help.
