->> I know that the G9 is a popular P&S in the sportsshooter community so I thought I would post this here and it seemed like we are due for some Canon bashing.
My G9 just recently would not powering on. I found some other people on the interwebs having a similar problem. After looking at http://www.myfixtips.com/blog/digital-camera/who-killed-my-g9-133.htm, I took off the front cover and I could see a loose screw that worked its way onto a board - http://twitpic.com/d3m4q. Not sure if this is related, but the screws on the bottom of the camera by the tripod socket are also missing. Another person that had the power on issue (http://celticland.com/about/canon-g9-wont-power-on-time-bomb/) had one of these screws missing. Maybe they ran out of loctite that day. I am going to ship mine off to Canon Factory Service and hopefully they will fix it for free.
This loose screw seems like a similar issue to the recall of the SD950:

As a current and long time Canon user, I will start the bashing with what I think happened when the 580 EXII was being developed.
Engineer: "Here is the new 580 EXII prototype. I was able to add an optical trigger, like Nikon has been doing for years"
Mgt: "How much will it cost?"
Engineer: "52 cents a unit"
Mgt: "Too much, also loose the master/slave switch, that looks expensive. And tell the guys in production there was a price increase in loctite, so once that runs out we will do without" |
