Murdoch to charge for access to his newspapers...

We've all read about these experiments before, but I wonder just how this will end up working out. These are some big web sites. Should be interesting to see what happens.

->> All you have to do is see what happens when photographers/musicians/etc. try to charge a fair rate for their work on the Internet to see how this will play. You get piracy and a plethora of free/dirt cheap choices that suddenly appear. And that's with content that you might want to look at/listen to more than once. With news content - which pretty much loses most of it's value once you read it - it will be even worse.

There is not enough uniqueness in their content to drive enough people to pay for it. Their competition is to blame to some extent. Example - let's say a Murdoch paper has an "exclusive" that such and such political figure has been having an affair with such and such employee. Their (free) competition is simply going to report the same thing, crediting the Murdoch property - until they can build up the story on their own. Once that's done they'll have the same info to share as the Murdoch property. No reason for someone to pay for access when they know they'll be getting it for free elsewhere.

The media properties could agree to play nice with each other and all go paid at the same time, but that would be collusion...which is illegal.

I'm not sure exactly how it will play out, but as long as alternate sources have the same basic content for free, the folks charging for it are doomed.

->> The WSJ, which Murdoch recently purchased, does the best job of charging for content imho. Some of it is free, some of it you get charged for. I subscribe to the paper and that doesn't qualify you to access the online material - that requires a seperate subscription.
