->> Friends,
I'm helping NPPA update its Student Internship Database. It's a list only for student members that has been a great resource in the past, but a lot of the information has grown out of date.
With staff reductions and cutbacks looming over our profession, some of you might be wondering, "Why's he even bothering with this?" At any given time this year, you could count the internship openings on one hand. Yeah. The short-term outlook is awful.
But we can't neglect the future. When (not if) our industry stabilizes, it needs to be filled with quality people who do quality work. Students and young professionals of today are a big part of that future. They need guidance.
Your place of work might not be offering internships right now. You can still be a part of our database, and I sincerely hope that you will be: I want you to be listed so you can be available as mentors to future journalists.
At the bottom of the post is the information that I need from you. Please send me the information in a message from my member page. If you're already listed, your information is probably out of date, so contact me anyways. DO NOT POST IT IN RESPONSE TO THIS MESSAGE. THIS INFORMATION WILL BE FOR NPPA STUDENT MEMBERS ONLY.
Thanks so much. Just a couple minutes of your time here can make a big difference in the life of a young person entering our craft.

->> Thanks for updating this.
Some classic quotes from the database as it stands:
"Nikon D1 pool equipment is provided, but applicant should have one good film body"
"[Notes: Send portfolio of 40 slides.]"
LOL. |

->> Good question, Jenny,
The database currently includes paid and unpaid internships, so we'll continue to list all internships regardless of compensation. In fact – to clarify – we're going to be listing NON internships. Crazy, huh? We're doing that for a variety of reasons:
(1) A lot of places aren't offering internships now. If we removed everyone who didn't have an internship right now, the database might waste away to nothing.
(2) We want students to know that these places still exist, might offer internships again in the future, and are open to mentoring them even if they can't offer a formal internship.
(3) We want students to have reliable, current information about who to contact and by what methods to contact them.
I'm excited about what we're doing here. It would probably be enough to simply update the information we have right now. But we're expanding it and hopefully making it a much better resource for students!
So folks, if you have a paid internship, unpaid internship, or a NON internship, get in touch with me. To be part of the NPPA database, you just have to be giving of your time and willing to help students. Get in touch with me, today!
Thanks for your interest, Jenny! And thanks to the handful of people who have already responded!

->> A big thank you goes out to the dozen or so people who have already contacted me privately with this requested information. The amazing thing has been that most of the replies are from editors at publications that weren't already listed, so we're actually expanding our list. This is GREAT. This was my hope from the beginning. Please keep 'em coming!
In the next week I hope to have made initial contacts will every publication currently on the list (and more) in hopes of getting a response by the end of the month. If you can save me the trouble and contact me before I have to look up how to reach you, it's much appreciated!
Best,
--Michael |
